Bioinformatics data analyst scientist

 


The Institute for Infectious Diseases (IFIK), University of Bern, Switzerland, is seeking a highly qualified and experienced staff bioinformatician to perform customer- and project-oriented genomic analyses. The new collaborator will be embedded in the Bioinformatics and Biostatistics group at IFIK.

We seek
A skilled researcher with demonstrated bioinformatic expertise, to apply and further develop bioinformatic data analysis workflows. The candidate will be responsible for conducting several projects in parallel, enabling the acquisition of a rich set of computing skills on various NGS and biology related topics.
Requirements
  • postgraduate degree in bioinformatics or related field (MSc as minimal qualification)
  • relevant work experience in omics and NGS data analysis: amplicon sequencing, whole genome sequencing, meta-genomics/transcriptomics
  • great numerical and analytical skills
  • advanced scripting skills (e.g., R/Bioconductor, Python/Perl, bash)
  • at least 2 years relevant work experience with Unix (Linux) systems, including installation and troubleshooting of software
  • excellent communication, team player
  • detail-oriented with excellent organizational and problem-solving skills
  • spoken and written fluency in English
The following qualifications are advantageous
  • background in microbiology, diversity analysis, phylogenetics, phylogenomics, or related fields
  • experience with both Illumina and Oxford Nanopore Technologies
  • experience in clinical or medical working environment
  • experience in service-oriented environments
  • familiarity with workflow managers for reproducible and scalable data analyses
We offer
The IFIK provides an international, collaborative atmosphere and a multidisciplinary approach to the entire spectrum of microbiology in diagnostics, research and teaching. Opportunities to be trained specifically on emerging technologies in bioinformatics will be offered as needed.
The salary will be based on the University of Bern's system (salary and social insurance).
Percentage of salary: 100%
Starting date: May-June 2021
Duration: Two years, with possible extension
