PhD fellow in Biophysics, The Niels Bohr Institute, Faculty of Science, University of Copenhagen

The Niels Bohr Institute, Faculty of Science at University of Copenhagen is offering 2 PhD scholarships in Biophysics commencing 01.07.2021 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Description of the scientific environment

The PhD positions are open in the experimental group of Liselotte Jauffred at the Niels Bohr Institute. The research activities will focus on evolutionary dynamics in bacterial colonies, and it will be carried out in the Experimental Biophysics Lab in collaboration with the Center for Models of Life.

The Experimental Biophysics Lab
includes experts in biofotonics, force-transduction and microscopists and is equipped with a variety of instruments for imaging, e.g., super-resolution, light-sheet, and confocal microscopy, as well as force-spectroscopy and microbiology labs. Further information can be found at https://www.nbi.ku.dk/english/research/biocomplexity/experimental-biophysics/research-facilities/

The Center for Models of Life consists of researchers that use methods from physics to develop an understanding of living systems, from modelling of gene regulation to dynamics of self-organization. Information about CMoL can be found at https://www.nbi.ku.dk/english/research/biocomplexity/cmol/

Project description
The two positions (i-ii) are funded by i) DFF Research Leader grant “How self-organization promotes antibiotic resistance in 3D bacterial communities” and ii) Inge Lehmann grant “How biofilm organization affects horizontal gene transfer within bacterial communities”.

The applicant should have a MSc degree in Physics (or expect to defend her/his thesis in the next months). Preference will be given to candidates with experience in one of the following fields: biophysics, optics, mathematical modelling, or bioengineering.

Principal supervisor is Research Leader Liselotte JauffredThe Niels Bohr Institute, jauffred@nbi.dkDirect Phone: +45 25721532.

  • Write scientific articles and your PhD thesis
  • Teach and disseminate your research
  • To stay at an external research institution for a few months, preferably abroad
  • Work for the department

Formal requirements
Applicants should hold an MSc degree in Physics, Engineering or Molecular Biology with good results and good English skills. As criteria for the assessment of your qualifications, emphasis will also be laid on previous publications (if any) and relevant work experience.

Terms of employment
The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff.

Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.
