Establishment of fast growing broadleaves plantations – the future raw material for biofuels

Description:

Are you interested in conducting research on fast growing tree species? The person we are looking will, as part of a PhD, conduct research on establishment of several fast growing tree species (poplar, hybrid aspen) on forest and agricultural land together with an active research group. The project will focus on understand the processes needed for a successful regeneration. An important part of this is to understand how the tree species will perform at a specific site conditions, how growth-increasing treatment should be performed and how using genetics can overcome problems during the establishment. For this research, we will use a newly established experiment spanning across of southern Sweden, establish new field experiment combining regenerations studies, genetic trials and field experiments. This research will contribute to fill a major knowledge gap that can demonstrate the possible land-use for fast growing tree species, thus show the possibility and functionality for these species in a future bio-economy.

Qualifications:

You must have a master’s degree in silviculture, forest science, biology, biostatistics, or equivalent, with focus on understanding plant plants growth, regeneration of forests, plant physiology, and soil chemistry. Other beneficial qualifications are experience of forestry analytics, using preferably R programming and good communications skills with fluency in written English. Special attention will be given to your analytical and problem-solving abilities and your ability to work independently as well as in a team.
