Post Doctoral Associate in Gut-Brain Axis in Neurodevelopment, Cumming School of Medicine




The  Faculty of Kinesiology at the University of Calgary is accepting applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar in Gut-Brain Axis in Neurodevelopment.

Job Description:

A postdoctoral fellow position is available at the Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institute (ACHRI) in the Departments of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology and Pediatrics for a highly qualified and motivated individual to support our basic laboratory projects focused on role of the gut-brain-microbiota axis in neurodevelopmental disorders.  The successful candidate should have a strong background in animal models, molecular biology, neuroscience, metabolomics, microbiota and metabolism. A background in bioinformatics (sequencing data, machine learning) would be considered an asset.
 
The candidate will work on research projects investigating the microbiome-metabolome relationships in neurodevelopment. Experimental approaches and tools will include rodent handling and in vivo behavioural testing, human specimens, microbiota sequencing, metabolomics and bioinformatics. The postdoctoral fellow will also have access to state-of-the-art core centres to perform cutting edge research.  The candidate will be expected to participate in training activities of the Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institute including research days, seminars and journal clubs. 

Qualifications:

  • The applicant is expected to be of the highest caliber with an academic and publication track record that would be competitive for national and international fellowships. 
  • Completed their Ph.D. or MD in Metabolism/Neuroscience/GI Physiology or other related discipline within the past five years. 
  • The candidate should have a strong background in working with neurological disease models in rodents. Further, experience in metabolomics and bioinformatics/computing would be considered an asset.  
  • High level of effective organizational, time management and personal initiative skills, along with excellent oral and written communication abilities, are a requirement for this position.  
  • Demonstrated capacity to work effectively in a collaborative environment

The successful applicant should have the ability to relocate to Calgary, Alberta beginning or shortly after July 1, 2021 (or earlier, depending on circumstances)
