Department of Agricultural Research for Northern Sweden

The Department of Agricultural Research for Northern Sweden (NJV) in Umeå conducts research and education in crop science and animal science, with a specific focus on forage based dairy production. The common threads in the activities are efficiency and sustainability for the whole production chain, from seeding the forage crop and feeding the animals, to the effect on milk and meat. Collaboration with other research environments and stakeholders are an important aspect for our research. The Department is also responsible for the activities at two important SLU infrastructures; a research farm with 120 dairy cows and a field station for research around crop production and agro-ecosystems in Northern Sweden.

The crop science group conducts research on cultivation of forage crops, which includes e.g. development of growth models, crop production management with remote sensing tools and spectral techniques, and agronomic studies.
