PhD Student Position in Spatial Mobility Analytics

 

The Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Unit at the Department of Geography, University of Zurich (UZH) invites applications for a fully funded PhD student position in the area of Spatial Mobility Analytics.

Your responsibilities

The PhD project will be supervised by Prof. Robert Weibel and Dr. Cheng Fu and will be situated in one of the focus areas of our group's research in spatial mobility analytics, including big mobility data analytics for urban applications, deep learning for place function modeling, mobility analytics for health applications, or movement simulation in animal ecology. The precise topic of the PhD project will be determined with the PhD student as part of the PhD process. For each of the possible focus areas, a set of initial research objectives and questions has been identified, but the successful candidate will be expected to develop and refine these further. The PhD project will have a strong methods-oriented focus, but will be linked to related research projects which we carry out in collaboration with partners in relevant related disciplines. The methods used will be predominantly computational, and depend on the focus that will be chosen for the PhD project, ranging from spatial data mining, to machine or deep learning, spatial statistics, or agent-based models. The position also involves teaching assistant duties in a small capacity.

Your profile

We are looking for a highly motivated researcher with a passion for science, and with an independent, efficient and effective work style. Applicants must have completed a master's degree (including a thesis) in Geography, GIScience, Computer Science, Data Science, or a related field. A strong background in quantitative data analysis, computational modeling, and programming is a prerequisite. Ideally, the candidate also has experience in spatial data analysis, machine/deep learning, and/or agent-based modeling. The successful applicant will also have a profound interest in collaborating in an interdisciplinary research team. Excellent written and strong spoken English communication skills are mandatory. Knowledge of German is considered an asset.
