Researcher / Postdoctoral Researcher for Green Information Technology

Applications are invited for a 5 or 6 months researcher / postdoctoral researcher position on green information technology. This position will be embedded in the Institute for Molecules and Materials.

As a researcher / postdoctoral researcher with a technical background, you will work together with a multidisciplinary team on the following topics:
I. Set up the requirements for application in field conditions and in network settings together with the expert users of methane sensors, and do so from practice, rather than from literature.
II. Investigate what sensors are currently available for use in practice and how they perform. Test some of the current detection schemes in the laboratory.
III. Evaluate new technologies such as photonics in light of what they may have to offer in the area of greenhouse gas measurement.

Together with our user members, you will initially focus on technologies for low-cost sensors to be in the field for continuous gas measurements. In collaboration with the Eindhoven University of Technology and a commercial partner, you will explore the flexible photonics-based platforms that can upscale to cost-effective, broad spatial coverage of measurements in the field. It is expected that the results will generate a reliable and sustainable basis for research and valorisation for future projects/funding that could ensure extension of the contract after this period.

We ask

  • A Master or PhD degree in physics, electrical engineering or a related discipline.
  • Preferably practical experience with signal processing, data acquisition, miniaturised sensing systems (e.g. photonics technology), lock-in techniques.
  • Preferably some programming skills (MatLab, LabVIEW).
  • A team player who enjoys working in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Good communication and organisation skills.
  • Fluency in English is required.

We are

The position is within the Exhaled Biomarkers and Exposure group that is part of the Department of Molecular and Laser Physics of the Institute for Molecules and Materials (IMM), Faculty of Science. We focus on real-time monitoring of volatile compounds such as biomarkers in exhaled breath of humans, as indicators of their health status. For this, we develop and use laser-based spectroscopy systems for targeted volatile compounds and apply mass spectrometry for both targeted and untargeted compounds. The physical environment is strongly affecting human health. Greenhouse gases are causing climate change, but they also contribute to respiratory disease due to smog and air pollution. There is a strong need for reliable gas sensors to generate accurate data on a large scale based on which decisions are taken to reduce overall environmental impacts of greenhouse gas emissions. We would like to tackle this problem by aiming to investigate existing and new technologies to build and use low-cost sensors to map the emission of greenhouse emission in the Netherlands. Together, the members of our group have over 20 years of experience with various gas sensing technologies, their applications in life sciences and data analysis. Furthermore, over the years, they built a broad network of users of these technologies and technical experts.

Our proposal is called Green Integrator: solution provider for measurements and analysis of greenhouse gas emissions. It was awarded the Green IT Voucher by the Faculty of Science at Radboud University.  Green IT Vouchers are presented by the Faculty of Science for innovation and collaboration projects relating to green information technology.

You will be appointed as a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute for Molecules and Materials (IMM). This institute is one of the major research institutes of the Faculty of Science at Radboud University. IMM is a research institute in chemistry and physics fostering interdisciplinary research. Its mission is to design and create functional molecules and materials with the intention of fundamentally understanding their behaviour.
