Job assignments

We are committed teachers with extensive and broad experience of all aspects of undergraduate and graduate education in mathematical statistics. We are appreciated by students and are continuously seeking opportunities for pedagogical improvement. Our ambition is to teach mathematical statistics at the highest international level.

As a successful applicant, you are expected to

  • conduct research in mathematical statistics,
  • teach courses in mathematical statistics and data science at bachelor, master and PhD levels,
  • supervise students (at bachelor, master and PhD levels),
  • undertake administrative tasks at the Department of Mathematical Sciences.

You should actively seek challenges and new opportunities in order to develop your work. Communication and collaboration skills are important since many of your duties will be carried out in collaboration with others, including actors outside academia. You are also expected to participate in popular science activities.

If you have no courses in University teacher’s training, you are expected to take such courses within one year from the start of the employment.

Eligibility

The eligibility for this employment follows from the Appointments Procedure for Teachers at the University of Gothenburg. A completed PhD degree in a subject area relevant to the position or similar scientific competence acquired in some other way. An applicant with a foreign degree that is judged to be comparable is also eligible.

The language of authority at the University of Gothenburg is Swedish and teaching normally takes place in Swedish at bachelor level and in English at the higher levels, therefore good language skills and the ability to teach in English are required. Applicants who do not speak Swedish at the time of employment are also expected to learn this within two years. The university provides teaching for those who do not have Swedish as their mother tongue.

Assessment

The assessment of your application will be based on your scientific skills and pedagogical merits. Both parts will be equally important for the final assessment.

When assessing your scientific proficiency, special attention is paid to your competence documented by publications of high quality. Quality is more important than quantity. Research with important contributions after your PhD degree as well as international scientific collaboration are considered as strong merits.

When assessing your pedagogical merits, special emphasis is placed on your ability to plan and teach courses in mathematical statistics. Teaching proficiency should be well documented and in a manner that makes it possible to assess the quality of the teaching activities.

In the assessment we look specifically for documented experience in research and teaching of mathematical statistics, in areas such as

  • Bayesian statistics, forensic statistics,
  • spatial statistics, extreme value theory,
  • biostatistics, bioinformatics, and systems biology,
  • stochastic differential equations, computational mathematics.

We will choose the applicant who, after the overall assessment of skills and potential to develop, is considered to have the best prerequisites to carry out the tasks included in the job description, to collaborate with other people, and to contribute to a positive development of the activities at the department. We will also take into account to what extent your research plans will strengthen and be complementary to the existing research activities at the department, and in particular with the Division of Applied Mathematics and Statistics.

Appointment procedure

The selection process will include evaluation by experts from outside the department, interviews, and trial lectures.
