A 2-2.5-year postdoctoral position is available at the Department of Bioscience, Aarhus University, Silkeborg, Denmark.

The research group focuses on how plants, animals and their habitats are affected by natural conditions (climate and soil amendments) as well as human activities (air pollution, pesticides, genetically modified plants, and various agricultural management systems). The department collaborates with several  international partners and has the overall responsibility for several large international research and development programs in EU and Africa.

Expected start date and duration of employment

This is a 2-2.5–year position from 1 September 2021 or as soon possible.

Job description

The successful applicant will participate in the Department’s work on eco-physiology and molecular biology of soil invertebrates with emphasis on adaptation and responses to thermal stress and the molecular mechanisms underlying these adaptive responses. The postdoc will investigate the genomic signature of evolutionary adaptation to extreme temperature conditions within the species Enchytraeus albidus (a small earthworm) which have been collected along an extended climatic gradient. In particular, he/she will investigate genomic adaptation that correlates with intraspecific variation in both habitat temperature and tolerance to thermal stress allowing identification of genes and molecular pathways important for thermal stress tolerance of this model organism. The work includes studies of membrane lipids, gene and protein expression, but also whole-organism studies of performance under laboratory conditions.

Your profile

The successful applicant should have a PhD degree in biological science and a proven track record of first author peer reviewed publications within relevant fields. Relevant research experience include eco-physiology, bioinformatics, molecular ecology and evolutionary biology of invertebrates. The candidate should be enthusiastic for learning new techniques and able to work independently. Strong analytical skills, experience with laboratory studies of invertebrates or other ectotherms, and the ability to communicate scientific work to international journals is expected. Depending on qualifications of the candidates, the position may be shared between two candidates with complementary qualifications (bioinformatics and ecophysiology), or filled by one candidate.

Who we are

The Department of Bioscience  (https://bios.au.dk/en/) is organized under the Faculty of Technical Sciences. We teach, provide consultancy and research in aspects right from bacteria to whales over genes to ecosystems and from basic research to applied biology in nature management and biotechnology. The Department has approximately 275 staff, just over 100 working in Roskilde, nearly 110 in Silkeborg and nearly 60 in Kalø. We work in close collaboration with our colleagues at Campus Aarhus.

The position will be anchored in the section for Terrestrial Ecology and the candidate is expected to work closely with other researchers/groups within the Section of Terrestrial Ecology and the department of Bioscience.

What we offer

The department offers:
  • a well-developed research infrastructure, laboratories and access to shared equipment
  • an exciting interdisciplinary environment with many national, international and industrial collaborators
  • a research climate encouraging lively, open and critical discussion within and across different fields of research
  • a work environment with close working relationships, networking and social activities
  • a workplace characterised by professionalism, equality and a healthy work-life balance.

Place of work and area of employment

Department of Bioscience, Vejlsøvej 25, 8600 Silkeborg and/or Bioinformatics Research Centre, Aarhus (Jutland), Denmark. The section currently working in Silkeborg is expected to move to Campus Aarhus during 2022.

All applicants will be notified whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee, and each applicant is given the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that concerns him/her self. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants.

Letter of reference

If you want a referee to upload a letter of reference on your behalf, please state the referee’s contact information when you submit your application. We strongly recommend that you make an agreement with the person in question before you enter the referee’s contact information, and that you ensure that the referee has enough time to write the letter of reference before the application deadline.
Unfortunately, it is not possible to ensure that letters of reference received after the application deadline will be taken into consideration.
