Associate professor in Marine Biology/Biodiversity

There is a vacancy for an associate professor at Department of Biological Sciences (BIO) University of Bergen (UiB), within the field Marine Biodiversity, affiliated with the Fisheries and marine biology (FMB) group.

About the Department

The Department of Biological Sciences (BIO) is a diverse and broad department that is heavily involved in topics such as the origin of life, effects of climate and global changes, fisheries, aquaculture, fish health, nutrition, Arctic areas, and global development and sustainability related research. About 2/3 of the scientific staff work with marine issues. BIO conducts education and research from organismal to population and ecosystem level within theoretical, experimental, and field-related topics and offers an exciting and out-reaching education and research environment within a broad field, with excellent opportunities for national and international interaction and collaboration.

Through co-location and collaborating research groups, the research at BIO is closely integrated with biological research at the University Museum in Bergen, Norwegian Research Centre AS (NORCE), and Institute of Marine Research (IMR). BIO is located in new and modern facilities at Marineholmen, near the city centre of Bergen. BIO has extensive experimental facilities at the Espegrend marine biological station, and access to unique habitats by use of research vessels and accompanying equipment and instrumentation through extended collaboration with IMR. Bergen represents one of the world's largest research clusters for marine research, which is reflected in the vision of UiB: "Sea, Life and Society." BIO aims to remain a leading research institute in marine biology both nationally and internationally.

The department's education covers a wide range of biological disciplines and is offered through two bachelor’s programmes, two master's programmes, two integrated five-year master’s programmes (Aquaculture medicine and Seafood and aquaculture) and teacher education, in addition to doctoral education. BIO has a Centre for Excellence in Education (SFU) bioCEED and thus a particular focus on developing quality in teaching and learning. BIO has recently joined an interdisciplinary Master’s programme initiative in Sustainability at UiB.

BIO was established January 2018 by merging the Department of Biology and the Department of Molecular Biology. The department is the largest of seven at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, and currently has approximately 300 employees, among them more than 60 professors or associate professors, around 80 PhD and Postdoctoral candidates and 70 technical/administrative employees.

Research field

The marine biodiversity of the oceans and fjords hold unlimited potential for both basic and applied research. In recent years, advances in modern molecular biology and next generation sequencing (NGS) have generated genomic approaches, which have created new opportunities, such as phylo-genomics, meta-genomics and eDNA. These new research areas have made it possible to shed light on the overwhelming and largely unknown biodiversity of the oceans. In combination with large facilities such as ocean-going research vessels, Remote Operational Vehicles (ROV´s), and classical collection equipment, “Marine Biodiversity” has become a research area conducting highly sophisticated and scientifically groundbreaking studies.

Based on the need for modern biodiversity research and the possibilities provided by utilizing BIO’s and collaborating institution’s extensive marine biological research infrastructure, BIO will fill a position as associated professor in Marine Biodiversity.

We are looking for a scientist in marine biodiversity with in-depth specialization in at least one of the following research fields:

Deep Sea biology

Marine community ecology

Faunistic/biodiversity analysis

Population genetics/genomics

Bioinformatics

Phylogenetic inference/phylo-genomics/biosystematics

High-level competence in more of the fields is considered an advantage. It is also an advantage if the candidate can demonstrate special knowledge about one or more marine invertebrate phyla.

Work tasks

In addition to conducting research and strengthening BIO’s research environment on the above-mentioned areas within marine biodiversity, the tasks will include coordinating BIO’s contribution to the new master program in sustainability at UiB. This interdisciplinary two-year program includes teachers from theory of science, geography, law, psychology, biology, climate science, and energy. The successful applicant will become the contact point both towards the other UiB-faculties participating in the teaching as well as the students. Further, the tasks will include coordinating the MSc-thesis supervision arrangements of the students in the “Marine sustainability” specialization.

The teaching duties also include teaching in the general field of marine biology, for example in the fields of basic organismal biology, marine faunistics, biodiversity, community ecology, as well as supervision of students at both the master and doctoral level. Pedagogic qualifications and previous teaching experience will be emphasized, and applicants should briefly outline their plans and philosophies related to teaching in this field. Applicants should be motivated to teach at all levels, from bachelor to PhD level.

UiB offers access to extensive experimental facilities at a marine biological station and access to unique habitats by use of research vessels and accompanying equipment and instrumentation. We encourage the applicants to outline how they plan to make use of these infrastructures in their research and teaching.

Qualifications and personal qualities

We are looking for a person with collaborative skills and team spirit that has ambitions of taking a lead in the field at the department. The successful applicant must fulfil the following criteria which will also be used for ranking the candidates:

Applicants must have a doctoral degree, or equivalent qualifications, within the field of biology.

Applicants must have in-depth knowledge of marine biodiversity, directed towards at least one of the research fields listed above.

Applicants must be able to document knowledge and research experience with practical, experimental and/or analytical methods in field-based marine biology.

Applicants must have significant contributions in relevant publications in international peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Applicants must be able to work independently and have strong collaborative skills.

Applicants must be able to contribute to research teams both as leader and as participant.

The successful candidate is expected to contribute to externally financed research activities and should document the ability to acquire external research funding.

Personal and relational qualities will be emphasized. Research experience, ambitions and potential will also count when evaluating the candidates. Since we are interested in attracting scientific staff that are on an upward trajectory in their career, emphasis will be given to the track-record achieved during the last five years of the applicant`s career when ranking applicants, excluding career breaks due to for example parental leave, sickness or other reasons. Ranking of candidates will partly take into consideration the need to fill open gaps in the department’s competence towards teaching and research.

Educational competence requirements

Applicants must document qualifications and experience in teaching and supervision of students. Such documentation can include:

proof of completed teaching training

evaluation reports of the applicant's teaching practice

overview of scope and level of teaching

overview of supervision of postgraduate and doctoral candidates, and results obtained

teaching awards received

own educational publications

own compendia and teaching material, reports showing participation in projects related to curriculum development and educational development, such as alternative learning or supervision methods or environments

Educational competence must be documented in an educational portfolio which should include a documented overview of practical experience and competence as well as a brief reflection statement. The statement should primarily describe the applicant’s own teaching philosophy and an evaluation of own teaching in relation to his/her knowledge of students’ learning at a higher education level. You will find more detailed information about criteria and documentation requirements for assessing educational competence here.

The teaching language will normally be Norwegian. The successful applicant must be able to teach in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language within two years of being appointed.

Basic teaching training is a desirable, but a successful applicant who does not have formal competence at the time of appointment will be offered training and will be required to document such training within one year of the date of appointment. This deadline is extended to two years for a successful applicant who does not master a Scandinavian language at the time of appointment.
