PhD position in applied computer science/machine learning

Our research group in the field of Digital Biomarkers (Health Informatics/Health Information Management) is looking for a new PhD student. We are affiliated with the Department of Management, Technology, and Economics (D-MTEC) and the ETH AI Center.

Job description

Our research is driven by a strong desire to conquer the great challenges that our changing society poses to the healthcare system. In the 20th century, healthcare systems specialized in acute care. In the 21st century, we now face the challenge of dealing with the specific characteristics of chronic conditions. With the mass adoption of information and communication technology, new opportunities have emerged for the prevention and treatment of diseases in the everyday lives of individuals. By leveraging these new technologies and drawing upon recent advances in artificial intelligence and statistical modeling we strive to gain deep insights. Unlike a PhD in pure Computer Science or Mathematics, our work tends to be more application-oriented, as we tailor mobile technology and advanced analytics to the application-specific requirements. Your office is located in the heart of Zurich - most likely Europe's most compelling place to live. Your work will involve key players and startups in the healthcare sector. You will work with a highly motivated team of young researchers in a very pleasant atmosphere. In the past, the usual length for a PhD degree has been around three and a half years, for which funding is guaranteed. During this time, participation in conferences and voluntary exchange programs are also supported. The salary and general working conditions are internationally highly competitive and according to ETH standards

A PhD candidate in the Chair of Information Management will be interested in the following topics:

  1. Health informatics with a focus on chronic systemic inflammation
  2. Machine learning / deep learning / artificial intelligence
  3. Mobile Technology

The position includes the following responsibilities:

  • Research and development of innovative solutions in the field of Digital Biomarkers
  • Supervision of master students
  • Limited teaching responsibilities
  • Involvement in academic activities (e.g., conference, seminar organization,…)

Your profile

Ideally, you have a strong analytical background and a master’s degree in Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Acoustics, Signal Processing, Computer Science or a related field. Also, programming experience is required. Fluency in the English language is highly recommended. Start of employment immediately or by agreement. Candidates will be screened continuously until the position has been filled.
