Postdoctoral position in pancreatic islet cell signaling

Uppsala University is a comprehensive research-intensive university with a strong international standing. Our ultimate goal is to conduct education and research of the highest quality and relevance to make a long-term difference in society. Our most important assets are all the individuals whose curiosity and dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has over 45,000 students, more than 7,000 employees and a turnover of around SEK 7 billion.

The Department of Medical Cell Biology at Uppsala University is a strong and international research environment. The department has about 100 employees, of which about 25 are doctoral students, 20 postdoctoral fellows, and 30 researchers, teachers and professors.

The position holder will join the laboratory of Prof. Anders Tengholm at the Department of Medical Cell Biology within Uppsala Diabetes Centre.

Duties/Project description: The hosting laboratory studies pancreatic islet cell biology and physiology with emphasis on inter- and intracellular signalling processes that control the release of insulin, glucagon and somatostatin. Insufficient secretion of insulin and dysregulated secretion of glucagon are hallmarks of diabetes but the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. The focus of this project is to define the role of various signalling steps in the regulation of glucagon release from a-cells using fluorescent biosensors, live-cell imaging techniques and kinetic measurements of hormone release.

Requirements: The applicant must have completed a PhD degree in cell biology, physiology or another relevant subject during the last 5-year period. The research work will be performed in a team working with mouse models and human islets using molecular biology and advanced microscopy imaging techniques. The successful candidate will be highly motivated and take initiative to propose and perform experiments with support by Prof. Tengholm and other members of the team.
