Postdoctoral researcher in Ubiquitin Signalling (biochemistry and mechanisms of stress and inflammation signalling)

A 2-year postdoc position in ubiquitin signalling is available from 1 September 2021 or shortly thereafter (starting date can be negotiated) in the laboratory of Associate Professor Rune Busk Damgaard .The project is funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation and the successful candidate will join an ambitious and international research team at the Department of Biotechnology and Biomedicine, Technical University of Denmark.

Research in the Ubiquitin Signalling and Inflammation Lab aims at understanding how cell signalling, particularly at the interface of inflammation, cell death, and metabolism, is regulated by ubiquitin modifications and how dysregulation of these signalling mechanisms leads to disease development, including autoinflammatory diseases and cancer. A particular focus of the lab is to explore and understand the cellular functions of the enigmatic 'atypical' ubiquitin chains. Our long-term goal is to discover new signalling mechanism and identify molecular processes that can be targeted pharmacologically to treat cancer and other diseases caused by chronic or dysregulated inflammation.

Responsibilities and qualifications
The postdoc will pioneer the development of new tools for deciphering atypical ubiquitin chain signalling, including M1-linked/linear chains, to understand how these ubiquitin modifications control cell signalling.

The project will involve experimental laboratory work using nanobody discovery and phage display technologies, molecular cloning, protein biochemistry, recombinant protein expression, in vitro assays, molecular cell biology, and cell culture systems to develop new techniques and tools to study the function of the enigmatic atypical ubiquitin modifications in cells. The project may also include cutting-edge mass spectrometry-based proteomics analyses performed in collaboration with the DTU Proteomics Core.

We are looking for a talented, curious, and highly motivated a candidate with the following qualifications and experience for this ambitious and pioneering project:

Essential skills:

  • PhD degree in biochemistry, molecular biology, or similar field
  • Strong background in biochemistry, molecular biology, and experimental design / assay development
  • Solid, demonstrated experience in protein biochemistry, including recombinant protein design, expression, and purification
  • Demonstrated experience in molecular biology, including PCR and molecular cloning, gel electrophoresis, and DNA sequencing
  • Demonstrated experience in in vitro enzymatic assays

Desirable skills:

  • Experience with ubiquitin signalling, protein quality control, or cell stress
  • Experience with analysis of cell signalling and multiprotein complexes (e.g. immunoprecipitation and pulldowns, western blotting, etc.)
  • Experience with phage display technologies or nanobody discovery
  • Experience with mammalian cell culture and cell biology
  • Experience with flow cytometry
  • Experience with genome editing (e.g. CRISPR/Cas9)
  • Experience with mass spectrometry-based proteomics

The successful candidate should thrive in a highly ambitious research group and will have demonstrated the ability to work independently and a documented track record of publication in internationally recognised peer-reviewed journals. Good communication skills in both written and spoken English are a requirement.

We offer
The Ubiquitin Signalling and Inflammation Lab offers a highly ambitious, exciting, encouraging, and dynamic work environment. Together, we design and execute experiments that lead to discovery of new signalling mechanisms involved in development of inflammatory disease and cancer. We work together in a young and fun team. We grow together as scientists to tackle important, fundamental research questions. Read more about the lab and our research here: http://bioengineering.dtu.dk/usi

The Ubiquitin Signalling and Inflammation lab is part of the Department of Biotechnology and Biomedicine, Technical University of Denmark. The department is highly interdisciplinary and a leading department within life sciences in Denmark, covering both fundamental, technological, and applied aspects of biomedical research. The successful candidate will join a recently started lab with excellent funding and support from Novo Nordisk Foundation, Lundbeck Foundation, and DTU. The candidate will benefit from a thriving international and collaborative community and state-of-the-art facilities with access to cutting-edge technologies and equipment.
