The Faculty of Social Sciences and the Academy of Finland research project Ethical Risks and Responsibility of Robotics and Artificial Intelligence invite applications for the position of

POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER IN PHILOSOPHY (AI ETHICS AND ROBOPHILOSOPHY)

for a two-year, full-time, fixed-term period from autumn 2021 onwards (starting date as agreed). The position will be located at the Faculty of Social Sciences.

We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher who has completed a doctoral degree no more than three years ago. The aim of the position is to encourage the appointee to further their skills and gain more experience to prepare them for an academic career.

The successful applicant will join a research team RADAR (https://researchportal.helsinki.fi/en/organisations/radar-robophilosophy...) working on various topics at the intersection of ethics, robotics, action theory, led by research coordinator Pekka Mäkelä together with Senior researcher Raul Hakli.

Candidates are expected to conduct research relevant to the above-mentioned research project. The core question of the project is how to use Artificial Intelligence (AI) responsibly in societal applications, especially in healthcare. Given the breadth of the project, suitable areas of specialization include a wide range of topics in applied ethics, action theory, philosophy of mind, philosophy of AI, robophilosophy and social ontology. Since the project studies the use of AI in social and health care applications, interest in and familiarity with medical and healthcare practices is appreciated. The successful applicant should also possess appropriate teaching skills in philosophy. The duties of the postdoctoral researcher include teaching for the Faculty of Social Sciences (5% of the annual workload).

QUALIFICATIONS

The default assumption is that the appointee will hold a doctoral degree before commencing work in the project, and have the ability to conduct independent scientific work. The working language will be English. The chosen applicant is expected to reside in Finland while employed by the University of Helsinki, and to participate actively in the intellectual life of the discipline of Practical Philosophy, and the wider scientific community across and beyond the Faculty of Social Sciences and the University of Helsinki. The Faculty of Social Sciences provides assistance in relocation.
