Researcher position in Computational Chemistry/Biology

Uppsala University is a comprehensive research-intensive university with a strong international standing. Our ultimate goal is to conduct education and research of the highest quality and relevance to make a long-term difference in society. Our most important assets are all the individuals whose curiosity and dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has over 45,000 students, more than 7,000 employees and a turnover of around SEK 7 billion.

The Department of Cell and Molecular Biology is one of the most international, broad and distinguished molecular bioscience departments in Europe. The department comprises six research programs with about 130 employees ( The position is available in Jens Carlsson’s group in the computational biology and bioinformatics programme. Jens Carlsson’s research focuses on using molecular modeling to study protein-ligand interactions, in particular G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) and their interactions with drugs. The GPCR superfamily constitutes the largest group of human membrane proteins and plays key roles in physiological processes. The Carlsson group uses structure-based models to understand receptor function and to design ligands of these pharmaceutically important targets, often in close collaboration with experimental groups. The Carlsson group is an international research team and is also part of the Science for Life Laboratory ( Visit the group website for more information (

Duties/Project description: The project is focused on developing and applying methods to study how neurotransmitters bind to receptors using molecular simulations. A central aim of the project is to understand the evolution of receptors and how they are able to distinguish between similar neurotransmitters such as dopamine and adrenaline. The project will also involve computer-aided design of ligands with specific pharmacological profiles.

The project will be carried out in close collaboration with experimental and theoretical research groups at Uppsala university, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, and Karolinska Institutet. Our research project is also described on the Knut and Alice Wallenberg foundation’s website:

Requirements: The applicant must hold a PhD degree in computational biology/chemistry or within another subject which the employer considers to be equivalent. Strong abilities in computational biology/chemistry with extensive experience in molecular dynamics simulations of proteins are required. Excellent written and oral knowledge of English is required as the work takes place in an international environment.

Additional qualifications: Experience in modelling of GPCRs, molecular docking or scientific programming is preferred, but not required.

The application:  Your application should include:

  • A letter where you describe yourself, your research interest, and why you are interested in the position (max. 2 pages).
  • A CV containing your education and other qualifications, a description of knowledge relevant for the requirements of the position, and a list of publications.
  • A copy of your PhD diploma.
  • Contact information to two reference persons.
