The School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences (BEES) has 160 academics, researchers and professional staff, and over 130 higher degree research students. BEES has research strengths in Ecology and evolutionary biology, Geography, Climate Science, Environmental change, sustainability and resources, and Paleo-environments and Earth History.
The Research Associate will be a marine ecologist working on Antarctic and subantarctic marine ecological research. They will be based at UNSW as part of the SAEF program (Securing Antarctica’s Environmental Future), an ARC Special Research Initiative program involving six Australian universities.
The Research Associate will contribute to multiple marine ecology research projects, some as lead researcher, and manage research students and staff under their supervision. They will be involved in all aspects of the research, including project design and management, remote fieldwork, sample processing, data analysis, and academic publications. They will participate in field trips to the Antarctic and subantarctic islands, sometimes for extended periods (weeks to months).

The role of Research Associate reports to Emma Johnston, Dean Faculty of Science and Graeme Clark, Senior Lecturer and has no direct reports.
Specific responsibilities for this role include:
- Contribute independently or as a team member in collaborative research with a focus to enhance the quality of research outcomes in Marine Ecology.
- Conduct research (as per the norms of the discipline) and/or enable research teams to create scholarly output that is recognised by peers.
- Undertake specific research project/s under the guidance of a research leader and contribute to development of research activities.
- Contribute to the experimental design and logistics planning.
- Preparation of research reports and support the dissemination of research outcomes through appropriate channels and outlets.
- Undertake discipline-appropriate research activities, e.g. surveys, literature reviews, data gathering and/or recording of results using appropriate research methods.
- Participate in and/or present at conferences and/or workshops relevant to the project as required.
- Assist with the supervision of research students in the research area where required.
- Conduct remote fieldwork in the Antarctic, subantarctic and Southern Ocean, sometimes for extended periods.
- Contribute to (in relation to opportunity and appointment level) service to the discipline, lab, school, university and professions.

About the successful applicant
(Selection Criteria)
To be successful in this role you will have:
- A PhD in Marine Ecology or related subject, and/or relevant work experience.
- Marine Ecology field and data analysis skills and experience.
- Statistical programming skills (e.g. R, Python or MATLAB).
- Experience and skills any of the following areas: microbiology, genetic sequencing and bioinformatics, photogrammetry, phycology, physiology, taxonomy of marine algae and invertebrates, chemical and nutrient sampling and analysis.
- Proven commitment to proactively keeping up to date with discipline knowledge and developments.
- Demonstrated ability to undertake high quality academic research in Marine Ecology and Antarctic research, and conduct independent research with limited supervision.
- Demonstrated capacity to effectively supervise research students.
- Ability and willingness to undertake long periods of remote fieldwork.
- Demonstrated track record of publications in leading journals and scientific conference presentations relative to opportunity.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a team, collaborate across disciplines and build effective relationships.
- Evidence of highly developed interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate and interact with a diverse range of stakeholders and students.
- Current drivers license.
- An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
- Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
