The Opportunity

You will be managing the operations of a variety of quality research on novel bio-inspired fire retardants for the Australian Research Council (ARC) funded Training Centre for Fire Retardant Materials and Safety Technologies. This is a collaborative role where you will work closely with other members of the centre to develop original fire retardants using new formulations and advanced manufacturing techniques.

This role will report to the Director (Prof Guan Yeoh).

  • Salary
    • Level B - Senior Research Associate, $110,459 to $130,215 per annum + 17% superannuation
    • Level C - Senior Research Fellow, $134,162 to $153,921 per annum + 17% superannuation
  • Full time
  • Fixed-term contract – 12 months
  • Location: Kensington – Sydney, Australia
  • Due to the current travel restrictions into Australia, we will be giving preference to applications from candidates currently residing in Australia and/or having Australian working rights.

Skills & Experience:

Level B

  • A PhD in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
  • Experience working with a range of flame retardant materials, coating applications, and mechanical performance testing on composite materials is highly desirable.
  • Extensive knowledge of Australian and International standards for assessing the fire-resistance performance of building materials, components, and structures.
  • Experience and related expertise in flame retardant coating methods and durability analysis for common polymer composites used in building materials.
  • Experience working in industry-driven research collaborations.
  • Ability to design and construct fire test experiments with a strong understanding of the fire tenability requirements and testing protocols.
  • Industry experience with partnering organisations from building and construction materials, mining and solar farm sectors.
  • Track record of independent research published in high-quality conferences and/or journals.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a high level of attention to detail for deliverables produced.
  • Sound influencing and consultation skills and proven ability to interact effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team, collaborate across disciplines and build effective relationships.
  • Evidence of highly developed interpersonal and organisational skills.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.

Level C (in addition to the above)

  • Evidence of significant contributions to research projects, including in planning.
  • Experience leading research teams and ability to operate and manage research programs within limited budgets.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and take responsibility for project goals.
  • Proven ability to influence senior management and stakeholders as appropriate to ensure successful outcomes.
  • Demonstrated track record in research with outcomes of high quality and high impact with clear evidence of the desire and ability to continually achieve research excellence as well as the capacity for research leadership.
