Lecturer in Wood Architecture  

The position will be filled according to the Aalto University Lecturer Career System (University Teacher/Lecturer, University Lecturer, Senior University Lecturer). The position is to be filled for a fixed term of 5 years, or as a permanent position, depending on the level of the lectureship. Your role and goals 

A lecturer´s duties include planning, coordination, implementation and development of teaching in Wood Architecture. The task also includes administration. Instruction of master’s theses, design and build studios, responsibility for communications and coordination of international cooperation is included. Part of the work time can be allocated to one’s own academic activities and/or artistic work.  

In addition to experience in teaching master level students the lecturer should have good team working skills and ability to organize and lead teamwork. A proactive, innovative, and experimental attitude for developing the area of wood construction is needed. Applicants are expected to work in multidisciplinary international environment with students from all over the world.  

Your network and team 

The lecturer is part of the Wood Architecture team and expected to cooperate with other schools at Aalto University, other Finnish and international universities as well as other Finnish and international partners in wood architecture, wood-based materials, and products. 

The lecturer will work in cooperation with professors, other teaching and research staff and studio supervisors of the Department of Architecture and other wood related departments at Aalto University. He/she will cooperate with many local and global partners and experts in the field of sustainable wood construction. 

Your experience  

The lecturer is required to have at least a higher university degree in fields of wood or interior architecture and design such as master level in architecture, industrial design, product design or computation. The lecturer must have experience in planning, organizing and teaching of university level courses. Artistic, practical and/or scientific merits and good teaching skills are required. Applicants must be acquainted with the recent development of wood architecture especially in the field of construction, production, and wood-based materials.  

Additional merits such as pedagogical education, research experience, active societal links and personal professional networks will be considered as an advantage. Comprehensive English skills and evidence of teaching international students is required.  Finnish skills is considered as an advantage. 

Good knowledge of wood working equipment, architectural and graphic design software and expertise in building or design projects and exhibition design are also an advantage.

Application process 

The Department Committee will select from among the applicants those who are invited to visit the Department of Architecture and possibly give a teaching demonstration in Aalto ARTS in April 2022 (week 16, 21.4.-22.4.). The Departmental Committee and the School´s teaching competence assessment committee will also interview the short-listed applicants. Aalto University uses external reviewers during the recruitment process.  

The applicants will be reviewed on the basis of following: artistic professional and/or research merits, experience and merits in working with wood, management and teaching competence, collaborative skills and activity in the professional field. The main weight is put on artistic-professional work and pedagogic skills.
