PhD Position from the field of Data analysis and annotation

Data is the new resource of the 21st century and data availability seems endless. Would you like to establish part of the data relationship life cycle for plant science? Then the division of Bioinformatics IBG-4 at the Institute of Bio- and Geosciences at Research Centre Juelich is the right place for you. The division of Bioinformatics (IBG-4) works on and develops methods and algorithms to achieve a fundamental understanding, especially of high-dimensional data and processes in the bio-economy. The IBG-4 focuses on knowledge management and data integration, classical bioinformatics, and machine learning, in particular for the prediction of phenotypes on biological questions concerning transcriptional reprogramming of plants during abiotic stress response, identification of metabolic pathways for secondary metabolites and understanding plant cell wall biosynthesis.

We are offering a

PhD Position from the field of Data analysis and annotation

Your Job:

  • You will work in the NFDI consortium DataPLANT on the definition of standards and ontologies (data matrices, biological parameters, environmental conditions, etc.) and their establishment in the field of scientific evaluation and processing of omics as well as other experimental data
  • You will contribute to the development of standards for the annotation of data analysis pipelines
  • Answering complex biological questions (e.g. co-regulation, stress responses, etc.) by using the developed ontologies
  • You will present the scientific results at project meetings and international conferences and publish them in high-ranking scientific journals

Your Profile:

  • MSc in Bioinformatics, Informatics, or Life Science
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Good knowledge of scripting a scientific programming language, e.g. Python/R and/or Java/Rust C++ for scientific purposes
  • Experience with the generation and/or analysis of experimental data and high-throughput data (e.g. NGS, Metabolite Profiling...) from the field of plant or other life sciences is a plus
  • Experience with data management and with publishing of high-throughput data is an advantage
  • Experience with biological and plant science ontologies and standards is a plus
  • Very good English skills, both written and spoken
