We are looking for a PhD student in Disability Research, with a focus on cognitive hearing science.

Your work assignments
As a doctoral student, you devote most of your time to doctoral studies and the research projects of which you are part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20% of full-time.

The position is placed within the research project N200, which is a longitudinal project where relationships between hearing loss, cognition, and psychosocial aspects are examined. The project includes three groups (200 participants in each, hence “N200”): people without hearing loss, people with hearing loss who use hearing aids, and people with hearing loss who do not use hearing aids. The groups are assessed on a comprehensive test battery of hearing and cognition on three occasions, and psychosocial health and social participation is assessed on occasions two and three. The data collection from the second occasion is about to being completed.

The PhD project will focus on one of three overarching research questions: 1) how age-related changes in memory systems relate to hearing loss, 2) how hearing aid use affects different memory systems importance for language comprehension, and 3) what connections there are between cognition, psychosocial health, and social participation. You can to some degree choose which of the research questions that becomes the focus in your work. Your main tasks include formulating scientific questions and compiling, statistically analyzing, interpreting, and presenting (e.g., at scientific conferences and in scientific journals) results. Data collection might also be part of what you do, as well as teaching and administration.

Your workplace
Research at the Disability Research Division (DRD) includes projects relating to hearing impairment and deafness, combined vision and hearing impairment, neuropsychiatric disabilities (e.g., ADHD), and learning difficulties (learn more about our research, https://liu.se/en/organisation/liu/ibl/ahv). Our scientific focus is on communication, cognition, and various language modalities including spoken, written, and signed languages. We study populations at different stages of the lifespan, as well as longitudinally. Our research is often experimental or correlational and aims to unveil behavioural, cognitive, and neural mechanisms.

Your qualifications
You have graduated at Master’s level in disability research, psychology, cognitive science, audiology, medicine, or other subject of relevance for disability research, or completed courses with a minimum of 240 credits, at least 90 of which must be in advanced courses in a topic of relevance for disability research. Alternatively, you have gained essentially corresponding knowledge in another way.

The department's research environment is interdisciplinary, and our projects usually involve integrating knowledge from different disciplines. Therefore, a basic requirement is that the applicant wants to do interdisciplinary research, and previous experience of interdisciplinary work is of special relevance. Of special relevance is also an educational background in psychology, cognitive science, audiology, medicine, or similar. Documented experience in administration and scoring of cognitive or linguistic tests or experiments is a special merit, as is documented proficiency in quantitative methods, statistical analysis, and the production of scientific texts. Documented experience of open science practices, such as pre-registration of studies, is a merit.

Since the project includes collaboration with international partners, the applicant must have a good command of English both orally and in writing.

Terms of employment
When taking up the post, you will be admitted to the program for doctoral studies. More information about the doctoral studies at each faculty is available at.

The employment has a duration of four years’ full-time equivalent. You will initially be employed for a period of one year. The employment will subsequently be renewed for periods of maximum duration two years, depending on your progress through the study plan. The employment may be extended up to a maximum of five years, based on the amount of teaching and departmental duties you have carried out. Further extensions can be granted in special circumstances.

Starting date
