We are looking for a PhD student in Disability Research.

Your work assignments
The position is placed within the research project “Neural networks involved in the processing of cognitive demands in noisy conditions”. The aim of the project is to understand neural correlates of the interaction between noise (e.g., disturbing factors) and working memory load during the processing of manual-visual and oral-aural language. By testing individuals that are fluent in both a spoken and a sign language the same linguistic content is investigated in both language modalities. Your work assignments will include planning and conducting functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) experiments, statistically analyze data, and present results in scientific and popular science settings.

As a doctoral student, you devote most of your time to doctoral studies and the research projects of which you are part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20% of full-time.

Your workplace
You will work at the Disability Research Division. The Division conducts pioneering theory-driven research with a focus on disability, based on neuroscientific, cognitive, pedagogical, and psychosocial perspectives. The research is mainly performed on groups with hearing impairment/deafness, combined visual and hearing impairment, neuropsychiatric disabilities (e.g., ADHD), and intellectual disabilities. Our research has a special focus on communication, cognitive skills, scholastic abilities, and various language forms, spoken as well as written and sign based. We study both child and adult populations. The research is based on both a quantitative approach, where we try to describe behavioral, cognitive, and neural mechanisms through experiments or correlation studies, and a qualitative approach, where we for example examine living conditions. Our internationally renowned research in Cognitive Hearing Science is conducted within Linnaeus Centre HEAD (https://liu.se/en/research/linnaeus-centre-head).

Your qualifications
You have graduated at Master’s level or completed courses with a minimum of 240 credits, at least 60 of which must be in advanced courses. Alternatively, you have gained essentially corresponding knowledge in another way.

Particularly meritorious is have knowledge of 90 credits in any subject of central relevance to disability research.

Particularly relevant is an educational background in cognitive science, neuroscience, psychology, or another subject of the same relevance to the project. It is also particularly relevant with documented skill in:

  • fMRI
  • cognitive psychology
  • neuroscience
  • programming
  • quantitative method, and
  • an ability to independently formulate and approach research question.

It is also as a merit with documented:

  • sign language skills, and
  • experience of other brain imaging techniques, such as EEG, MEG, and fNIRS.

Terms of employment
When taking up the post, you will be admitted to the program for doctoral studies. More information about the doctoral studies at each faculty is available at.

The employment has a duration of four years’ full-time equivalent. You will initially be employed for a period of one year. The employment will subsequently be renewed for periods of maximum duration two years, depending on your progress through the study plan. The employment may be extended up to a maximum of five years, based on the amount of teaching and departmental duties you have carried out. Further extensions can be granted in special circumstances.

The salary of doctoral students is determined according to a locally negotiated salary progression.
