PhD student in Engineering Materials with focus on Additive Manufacturing

Skilled and committed employees are a crucial factor in the success of Linköping University. And we need more of them. Our core expertise comes from teachers and researchers, but a successful university requires experienced and motivated employees in many fields. Everyone is important. We need to recruit many new employees thanks to, among all, an expansion in our research activity. We need you here. We look forward to receiving your application!

The Department of Management and Engineering (IEI) strengthens and develops tomorrow’s industry, business world and society by ground-breaking research, education and innovation. Our teaching and research cover a broad spectrum of fields from economics and management to technology and design. We are a department that sees innovation, development and innovation as fundamentally necessary to strengthen a sustainable society. Collaboration and dialogue permeate our operations, making positive and productive relationships with companies and other organisations possible. This in turn helps to make our students highly sought-after, and ensures that research can be used to increase competitiveness and sustainability.

We are looking for a PhD student in Engineering Materials with focus on Additive Manufacturing

Your work assignments
The Division of Engineering Materials at the Department of Management and Engineering (IEI) at Linköping University is looking for a PhD-student in material and process development for additive manufacturing with a focus on electron beam powder bed fusion (EB-PBF) also known as electron beam melting (EBM). Equipment for this technology has recently been procured by the department and will be commissioned during spring of 2022. The PhD-student will be an important resource for developing the research activities connected to this new infrastructure.

The work consists of process development for different types of metallic materials, i.e. studies to find optimal process parameters and create an understanding of the process parameters' impact on defects, microstructure and material properties. The doctoral student will also work together with other researchers to implement new hardware and software to facilitate work on material and process development for EBM.

The research work will be primarily of experimental character where the doctoral student, in addition to creating the materials himself, evaluates these with the help of various material characterization techniques and mechanical testing. Analytical skills are also meritorious as important parts of the work are literature studies, numerical modeling, evaluation of results, and scientific writing. As programming will be a necessary for this specific position, basic programming skills will be a merit.

As a doctoral student, you devote most of your time to doctoral studies and the research projects of which you are part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20% of full-time.

Your workplace
The Division of Engineering Materials carries out research, undergraduate and postgraduate eduction within in materials and manufacturing technology. One of the current research areas within the division is additive manufacturing of metallic materials, research that is often conducted in close collaboration with other research groups and Swedish industry, e.g. within the competence centre for additive manufacturing in metal (CAM2).

Your qualifications
You have graduated at Master’s level in e.g. Mechanical Engineering, Material Science or Physics or completed courses with a minimum of 240 credits, at least 60 of which must be in advanced courses in Mechanical Engineering, Material Science or Physics. Alternatively, you have gained essentially corresponding knowledge in another way.

It is a merit if applicants for this position have knowledge in one or more of the following areas; additive manufacturing, materials and manufacturing technology, advanced material characterization techniques, mechanical testing, measurement techniques and programming.

As the communication of research results mainly takes place in English, this employment requires advanced skills in English, both spoken and written. It is an advantage if you also have advanced skills in spoken and written Swedish. Experiences of conducting, writing and presenting research work in different contexts are meritorious.

Terms of employment
When taking up the post, you will be admitted to the program for doctoral studies. More information about the doctoral studies at each faculty is available at.

The employment has a duration of four years’ full-time equivalent. You will initially be employed for a period of one year. The employment will subsequently be renewed for periods of maximum duration two years, depending on your progress through the study plan. The employment may be extended up to a maximum of five years, based on the amount of teaching and departmental duties you have carried out. Further extensions can be granted in special circumstances.
