Postdoctoral fellow in pathology and molecular profiling of prostate cancer

The Department of Radiation Sciences is, in terms of research, a dynamic and internationally successful environment in diagnostic radiology, oncology, cognitive neuro-science, radiation physics and bio-medical engineering. The department belongs to the Faculty of Medicine at Umeå University.

The Department of Radiation Sciences welcome applications for postdoctoral studies in molecular pathology and imaging. The position is for two years full-time, starting June 1 2022 or by agreement.

Project description

The project is focused on a detailed histopathology and molecular profiling of prostate cancer in an unique dataset of 55 patients parafin embedded surgical specimens and in-vivo imaging using MR and PET. The overall goal of the project is to find associations between in-vivo imaging with MRI and PET and histopathology and molecular markers. At present point a detailed analysis of the correlation between different markers of tumor aggressiveness such as Gleason score, Ki67 and PSA expression, molecular subtype and the in-vivo imaging in the multiple tumor lesions present in each of these prostates are ongoing. The holder of the position will take part in the current efforts and explore further approaches such as molecular subtyping and exploration of lesion properties that may lead to false negative and false positive imaging results. There are several clinical goals that we address in the project for example diagnostic classification of newly diagnosed prostate cancer and characterization of the decease for radiotherapy planning purposes.

The workplace will be at the pathology department, but with intense collaboration and contact with radiology, oncology and medical physis. The successful applicant will be given the opportunity to develop independent research ideas, within the scope of the project.

Eligibility

A person who has been awarded a doctorate or a foreign qualification deemed to be the equivalent of a doctorate in medical sciences or similar is eligible for appointment as postdoctoral researcher. This eligibility requirement must be met no later than the time at which the appointment decision is made.

Previous experience in tumor biology and in histopathological examination of tumors are required. A very good command of written and spoken English is required.

Additional useful qualifications

Since appointment as a postdoctoral researcher is a career-development position for junior researchers, we are primarily interested in applicants who completed their doctoral degree no more than three years before the application deadline. If there are special reasons, an applicant who has completed their degree earlier than that may be considered. Special reasons include absence due to illness, parental leave, clinical practice, appointments of trust for a trade union organisation or other similar circumstances, and for relevant duties/assignments within the subject area.

Experience from previous studies of prostate cancer is an advantage.

We are looking for a highly motivated scientist who is quick to learn and has a demonstrated ability to work productively both independently and in a multidisciplinary team.
