The Department of Chemistry invites applicants for a PhD fellowship in aluminium promoted regioselective deprotection of cyclodextrins. The project is is part of a research program directed at creating artificial enzymes and is financed by the Novo Nordisk foundation.
Start date is 1 August 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter.
The project
Cyclodextrins are inexpensive starch-derived molecules that can bind small lipophilic molecules. This gives cyclodextrins many areas of application in food and perfume industry, drug-livery and research. Being able to modify cyclodextrins selectively enhances their use and applications further because it can change their physical properties including which molecules they bind. However chemical modification of cyclodextrins is difficult due to their complex structure. A useful method of cyclodextrin modification is diisobutyl-aluminiumhydrid (DIBAL) promoted deprotection of perbenzylated cyclodextrins, which gives access to selective modifications on the primary side of the cyclodextrin – however no similarly efficient modification of the secondary side exist. The topic of this Phd project is find ways to modify both rims of the cyclodextrin selectively. Taking off in exiting discoveries in our lab the Phd student must carry out systematic investigated aimed at understanding and taming a complex reaction.
Who are we looking for?
We are looking for candidates in organic chemist with a background as chemists, chemical engineers or similar. Training in organic synthesis is required and experience with structural elucidation with NMR an advantage.
Our group and research- and what do we offer?
The phd project will be carried out in the research group of Professor Mikael Bols at the Department of Chemistry. In addition a 6 month research stay in Professor Matthieou Sollogoub’s group at the chemistry department of University of Sorbonne will be part of the project.
The group is a part of the department of chemistry at the Faculty of SCIENCE, University of Copenhagen. We are located in Copenhagen.

The PhD programme is a three year full-time study within the framework of the regular PhD programme (5+3 scheme). You must have an education equivalent to a relevant Danish master’s degree.

Terms of employment
Employment as PhD fellow is full time and for maximum 3 years.
Employment is conditional upon your successful enrolment as a PhD student at the PhD School at the Faculty of SCIENCE, University of Copenhagen. This requires submission and acceptance of an application for the specific project formulated by the applicant.
The terms of employment and salary are in accordance to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State (AC). The position is covered by the Protocol on Job Structure.
Responsibilities and tasks in PhD programme
- Carry through an independent research project under supervision
- Complete PhD courses corresponding to approx. 30 ECTS / ½ FTE
- Participate in active research environments, including a stay at another research institution, preferably abroad
- Teaching and knowledge dissemination activities
- Write scientific papers aimed at high-impact journals
- Write and defend a PhD thesis on the basis of your project

The further process

The assessor will conclude whether each applicant is qualified and. The assessed applicants will have the opportunity to comment on their assessment.
