Postdoctoral Fellow in Physiology

Applicants are invited for a 3 year position as Postdoctoral Fellow in Physiology to be based at Institute for Basic Medical Science (IMB), the Department of Molecular medicine, Section for Physiology, University of Oslo.

The position is connected to the convergence environment 3DR  with the main aim of increasing the availability and function of donor organs. This interdisciplinary team consists of scientists from biology, basic and clinical medicine and theology. The announced position is connected to the heart physiology group at IMB. More information about the group can be found here: https://www.med.uio.no/imb/english/research/groups/heart-physiology/index.html

More about the position

The main purpose of the fellowship is to qualify researchers for work in higher academic positions within their disciplines. The main aim for the announced position is establish and test methods to evaluate cardiac function in donor heart after circulatory death in experimental rodent models. The hearts will be exposed to at least 5 minutes of warm ischemia and will thereafter be perfused ex vivo in isolated perfusion systems (either Langendorff or working heart). Different cardioplegic and cardio preservation solutions will be tested. Cardiac performance and molecular analysis will be tested on hearts ex vivo and in vitro. One target is reduced mitochondrial damage during reperfusion. In later parts of the project, the best strategies can also be tested with in vivo ischemia reperfusion models in rodents.  Noninvasive ultrasound will be used to evaluate cardiac function.

The successful candidate will be a person with relevant background and the ability to work both in team and independently. Experience with independent project management, supervision and interest in interdisciplinary projects is an advantage. Practical experience with animal handling and cardiovascular experiments is an absolute requirement.
