The appointment is a fulltime position for a period of four years, including 25 % teaching in immunology. The candidate must be qualified to teach cellular and molecular immunology at an upper bachelor/post-graduate level.
Alternatively, the appointment is a fulltime position for a period of three years (10% of which is devoted to required duties, usually in the form of teaching activities).

Job description / Project description / Development plan:
The position is associated with the Comparative Immunology Group in the Section of Physiology at IBV. The group works closely with scientists in the Department of Immunology, Oslo University Hospital - Rikshospitalet, Institute of Clinical Medicine, Faculty of Medicine and at the Centre of Ecological and Evolutionary Synthesis (CEES) at IBV, and seeks to understand host responses and protective immunity in vertebrates with “unusual” immunogenomes. While the adaptive immune system encompassing B cells, T cells and MHC class I and class II loci is shared among all jawed vertebrates, Atlantic cod and other codfishes specifically lost the MHC class II locus and CD4+ T cells approximately 100 mya. In other vertebrates (including most other fishes), the MHC II – CD4 axis is required for strong antibody responses and vaccine efficacy. Recently, whole genome sequencing has added more teleosts to the list of vertebrates with unusual immunogenomes.
The candidate for this position will work mostly with cellular, molecular and bioinformatic analyses of immune cells and genes in codfish and other teleosts with unusual immunogenomes. The project will employ single-cell transcriptomics of immune cells and other cutting-edge technology within molecular biology, modern high-throughput sequencing and bioinformatics. The candidate will join a strong academic research environment.
The laboratory work of this project is located in the Department of Biosciences, the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, UiO, at Blindern campus and at the Department of Immunology, Oslo University Hospital - Rikshospitalet, Institute of Clinical Medicine, Faculty of Medicine. Additionally, experimental work with codfish is carried out at NIVA research station Solbergstrand near Drøbak. The project will also include fieldwork on research vessels operated by The Institute of Marine Research.
Postdoctoral fellows who are appointed for a period of four years are expected to acquire basic pedagogical competency in the course of their fellowship period within the duty component of 25 %.
The main purpose of a postdoctoral fellowship is to provide the candidates with enhanced skills to pursue a scientific top position within or beyond academia. To promote a strategic career path, all postdoctoral research fellows are required to submit a professional development plan no later than one month after commencement of the postdoctoral period.

Qualification requirements
The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has a strategic ambition to be among Europe’s leading communities for research, education and innovation. Candidates for these fellowships will be selected in accordance with this, and expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials.
Applicants must hold a degree equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree in immunology or a closely related field with significant employment of bioinformatic analyses. Doctoral dissertation must be submitted for evaluation by April 4th 2022. Only applicants with an approved doctoral thesis and public defence are eligible for appointment.
Practical experience with general molecular and cell biology techniques is required
User-level bioinformatics experience is required
Experience with single-cell transcriptomics of immune cells will be an advantage
Experience with fish biology and fish experimental biology will be an advantage
Fluent oral and written communication skills in English
Interest and experience from teaching (particularly if applying for a four-year position)

If an applicant has applied for and been granted funding for a fulltime research stay abroad while being employed as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow, the employment will be prolonged with the equivalent time as the research stay, but for no longer than of twelve months ( thus extending the employment to a maximum of four years)

Department of Biosciences (IBV) is one of nine departments at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences.
