Postdoctoral Researcher in Molecular and Translation Lung Cancer Research

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher (Scholarship) with an interest in lung cancer biology/therapy. You should hold great prior knowledge in tumor biology and it is preferred that you already are familiar with extracellular vesicles (EVs) research. When joining us you will work in a multidisciplinary environment, close to frontline preclinical/translational/clinical lung cancer research but also in context of radiation therapy as well as with our partners on microchip technology for EVs characterization.

For more information of Department of Oncology/Pathology information is given here:

More information about the Team Lewensohn research line is given here:

Research team Lewensohn Viktorsson Lindberg

Division

You will work in the Ekman research group, Team Lewensohn, and in particular in our preclinical research which focus on EVs analyses in lung cancer. You will in particular work with EVs as a signalling component in context of mutated EGFR, Ephrin/Eph growth factor receptor signalling and prior and post radiation therapy. The work will be carried out in lung cancer cell line models in vitro but with validation in clinical samples from lung cancer patients.

Duties

You will together with the team set up a project on EVs to decipher their role in resistance to EGFR-TKI treatment and in particular to understand the role of the Ephrin and Eph signalling network in this context. You will design and carry out experiments, in an independent way, on EVs in this context using lung cancer cell line models and front-line technologies . You will use EVs from clinical liquid biopsies (e.g. plasma, serum and pleura effusion fluids) to validate the clinical relevance of your preclinical results. You will also be part of a preclinical validation project on markers identified in EVs from patient plasma/serum or pleura effusion fluid in relation to radiation therapy or EGFR-inhibitors.

Entry requirements

Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.

A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year-period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.
To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) start date of the post-doctoral education.

The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

Other requirements

We are looking for you who holds a PhD degree from a University outside Sweden. We want to recruit you who have made a thesis work related to tumour biology and we are in particular seeking you with prior knowledge on EV analytics. You need to be able to independently carry out standard cell- and molecular- biology techniques such as cell culture work, tumour treatment, siRNA transfection, flow cytometry, western blotting, immunofluorescence etc. It is clearly an advantage if you have worked with EV analytics previously.

Type of scholarship

Full time contract with Scholarship for a first six-month period with possible prolongation. The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.

Application process

An application must contain the following documents in English:

  • A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  • A complete list of publications
  • A summary of current work (no more than one page) and its relation to the advertised position
  • A one-page description on technology skills with emphasize on the advertised position and your capacity to independently carry out/evaluate results from these.
  • Letter of recommendation and contact information (email and phone) to two references (which has agreed to be reference)

The application is to be submitted on the Varbi recruitment system on the 15th of April at the latest.

Assessment criteria

The entry requirements for scholarship postdoc is indicated above. Apart from these the following criteria will be assessed and form the basis for selection of candidates to personal interview for the position.

  • PhD degree in the tumor biology or exosome field (assessed by CV)
  • Fluent in written and spoken English (assessed by CV)
  • At least two 1st author paper in a cancer-linked journal with peer review process (assessed by publication list submitted with the application)
  • Demonstrated skills in cell culture work, tumour treatment, siRNA transfection (assessed by CV and/or publications submitted with the application)
  • Personal qualifications and research interest/plan (assessed by personal letter in application)

It is particularly meritorious that the applicant has:

  • Previous experience in working in translational cancer research (assessed by publication list submitted with the application)
  • Skills and independently can work with technologies such as flow cytometry, western blotting, immunofluorescence (assessed by publications and/or CV)
  • Methodological experience in EV analytics (assessed by publication list submitted with the application)
  • Experience in Electronic Lab Book documentation which is a prerequisite at KI for all research (assessed by CV and personal letter)
  • Previous experience from working abroad in other labs than where the PhD degree lab was obtained (assessed by CV)

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area and personal interview of candidates, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
