Principal researcher in Lung and Airway Research

This is a position in the Division for Lung and Airway research (LAR), at the Institute for Environmental Medicine, Karolinska Institutet. The division is headed by Professor Anders Lindén, who has a long-standing interest in the role of Th17-associated cytokines in host defence and chronic airflow limitation. The long-term goal of this line of research is to characterize novel and critical aspects of immune signaling among patients with chronic airflow limitation to identify targets for diagnosis, monitoring and therapy.

Your mission

Your mission is to contribute to the development of tools for precision medicine in chronic airflow limitation and associated comorbidities, primarily by improving the understanding of alterations in immune signaling in relation to the course of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and/or asthma.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as a Principal Researcher, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the applicant must have demonstrated research expertise. The applicant must also be a Research Leader and have established their own line of research. The applicant should furthermore have shown documented, high-quality scientific production, particularly in the last six years and have the potential to energetically drive their research forward as well as be recognized nationally and internationally. The applicant should also have obtained good, long-term and preferably external funding and have the potential to obtain further external funding.  The applicant should have shown teaching and supervision experience and demonstrated good leadership qualities.

Assessment criteria

We are seeking a highly motivated researcher with a strong desire to study underlying mechanisms of chronic airflow limitation related to environmental and/or bacteriological exposure. A documented interest in immune signaling and/or immunometabolism is important. A strong scientific track record, personal commitment, and proven ability to work in a team are important requirements. To meet our expectations, you will benefit from several years of experience from a position as a specialist physician in Respiratory Medicine and/or Allergology. You will need expertise in clinical as well as translational research methods. Documented experience from the supervision of PhD students is advantageous. Your previous research experience should be applicable to the fields of respiratory medicine, allergology and/or immunology. We welcome a creative, dedicated, and committed team-player to our group, one who is willing to invest in a long-term commitment for clinically relevant and innovative medical research.

It is particularly meritorious that the applicant has shown

  • An excellent scientific track record as principal investigator in clinical and translational research on asthma or COPD and associated comorbidities, including chronic bronchitis and/or bronchiectasis.
  • Ability to design and lead original research in relevant areas.
  • Long-term experience as a specialist physician in Respiratory Medicine and/or Allergology.
  • Documented experience from the supervision of PhD students and post-docs.
  • Qualifications to be promoted as Group leader after being appointed.
  • Ability to generate external funding for his/her own line of research.
  • Excellent skills in English and Swedish language.

It is meritorious that the applicant has shown

  • In depth-knowledge and practical experience from standard methods of cell and molecular biology (flow cytometry, ELISA, and RT-PCR or NGS-RNA sequencing).
  • Documented experience from translational animal and cell models.
  • Documented experience from epidemiological studies, clinical drug trials, multi-center studies, bronchoscopy studies.
  • Documented experience from teaching of undergraduate and graduate students.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.

What do we offer?

A creative and inspiring environment with wide-ranging expertise and interests. Karolinska Institutet is one of the world's leading medical universities. Our vision is to pursue the development of knowledge about life and to promote a better health for all. At Karolinska Institutet, we conduct successful medical research and hold the largest range of medical education in Sweden. Karolinska Institutet is a state university, which entitles to several benefits such as extended holiday and generous occupational pension. Employees also have access to our modern gym for free and receive reimbursements for medical care.

Location: Karolinska University Hospital Solna and Huddinge, IMM and Bioclinicum.

Unit

Within LAR, we perform studies aimed at characterizing cellular and molecular mechanisms in pulmonary host defence of humans, primarily to improve the understanding of the pathogenesis of obstructive airway disease including COPD and asthma. A specific aim is to characterize how exposure to environmental agents influences the mobilization of adaptive and innate immune cell populations in relation to Th17-associated cytokines in human airways. The researchers in LAR share laboratory facilities with the Division of Respiratory Medicine, Department of Medicine Solna and has close collaboration with the clinical Department of Respiratory Medicine and Allergy at Karolinska University Hospital, a circumstance that facilitates the access to well-defined clinical materials.

Application

We prefer that Your application is written in English, but You can also apply in Swedish. An application must contain the following documents: Resumé, qualifications and description of planned research, presented in accordance with Karolinska Institutet's qualifications portfolio.

Welcome to apply.

The applications will be reviewed by external reviewers.

The application must be submitted through the Varbi recruitment system.
