PDEng in Design and optimization of a hydrothermal process to convert organic residues into a fuel

Are you interested in high-end technological design? Then, the Professional Doctorate in Engineering (PDEng) programme Energy and Process Technology is very interesting for you. The PDEng programme is a 2-year post-MSc technological programme with a focus on technological design. This programme at the University of Twente contains an educational part that will be followed at the University of Twente, and a design project that will be carried out at the TORWASH company. The educational programme will have an in-depth and broadening character with ample attention for professional development and will be partly tailored to the design project.

Project description

The company TORWASH has developed and patented a novel process that converts wet organic residues into a solid feedstock for heat and power generation or production of biochemicals. The process is performed under elevated temperature and pressure, and the water is used as a reaction medium for the hydrolysis to separate solid and liquid fractions. By processing and reusing the liquid fraction to cover the energy demands of the process, a zero-waste energy neutral technology is achieved.

The specific objective of the PDEng design project is to further develop and optimize the process such that a high quality final product can be obtained. Modeling of the tube-in-tube reactor and gaining a knowledge regarding the phenomena which occur in its inside are here the main tasks. For modeling an open source CFD programme (OpenFOAM) will be used in combination with an Eulerian-Lagrangian approach to predict the flow of continuous and discrete phases. For the process optimization various reactor geometries and injection conditions will be investigated. These will include: reactor diameter, positioning angle of the reactor tubes, dry matter content, pressure swing, etc. The obtained data will give insight into the phenomena interacting inside the reactor and it will be used to optimized the heat transfer process. The ultimate goal of the project is to design geometrical and process parameters that will lead to superior product formation.

Activities:

CFD aided design of optimized reactor geometry and process operational parameters

Techno-economic analysis of the designed unit/process
