The Department of Environmental Science is one of the biggest departments at the Faculty of Science. The department consists of four units with more than 190 researchers, teachers, doctoral students and technical/administrative staff from over 30 countries. Research and teaching focuses on chemical contaminants, atmospheric science, biogeochemistry and (eco)toxicology. Research in the Biogeochemistry Unit focuses on the biogeochemical cycles of carbon, nitrogen and metals in soils, fresh water bodies, and the ocean. The unit has a strong and long-standing research focus on the impact of global warming on Arctic environments with the overarching goal to improve the systems understanding and future projections of biogeochemical cycles in this system.

The Biogeochemistry Unit is now seeking a Research Engineer to complement our team and contribute to developing and executing experimental work on carbon cycling in a changing Arctic.

Main responsibilities
The Research Engineer will support a range of research activities planned for 2022 and 2023, including for the new ERC Starting Grant project PRIMETIME on the impact of plant-soil interactions on Arctic CO2 fluxes. Main responsibilities:

  • Contribution to conceptual development, establishment and testing of experimental setups with soils and living plants in the field and laboratory
  • Maintenance, troubleshooting, calibration and quality assurance of analytical equipment (e.g. cavity-ringdown laser)
  • Contribution to planning of and possibly participation in Arctic field campaigns
  • Ordering supplies and technical equipment
  • Close interaction with postdoctoral researchers, PhD and master students as well as collaboration partners
  • Support with lab management and other tasks as needed.

Qualification requirements
We are looking for a well-organized, hands-on and service-oriented person with

  • M.Sc. or Ph.D. degree, in e.g. environmental science, bioscience, geoscience, engineering
  • Interest in contributing technical expertise to climate change research
  • Experience with laboratory or field experiments
  • Experience with the maintenance and quality assurance of analytical instruments
  • Collaborative skills and proficiency in English.

Terms of employment
This is a full-time, time-limited position for one year. We are aiming for a starting date in fall 2022. Salaries at Stockholm University are determined individually; therefore, please indicate your requested salary. Start date immediately.
