The Department of Environmental Science (ACES) is one of the largest departments at the Faculty of Science. The department consists of four units with more than 190 researchers, teachers, doctoral students and technical/administrative staff from over 30 countries. Research and teaching focuses on atmospheric science, biogeochemistry, chemical contaminants and (eco)toxicology. The department has a strong focus on research (>100 peer-reviewed research articles per year), spanning from couplings between climate change and biogeochemical cycles (atmosphere-land-ocean) to the sources, transport and effects of environmental contaminants. At the Unit for Biogeochemistry we are studying many aspects of the composition and functioning of the Earth system and large-scale biogeochemical cycles, and how these are affected by and feed back on anthropogenic perturbations such as climate warming. Two of our prioritized research areas are (i) how thawing land and subsea permafrost systems in the Arctic affects large-scale carbon cycling, including triggering release of greenhouse gases, and (ii) how air pollution in particularly South Asia affects the composition of the atmosphere and the climate.

We analyse specific molecules (i.e., gases and biomarkers), major and minor elements, isotope ratios and the compound-specific isotope fingerprint in matrices such as air, seawater, sediments and soil, along with many other geochemical and geophysical system parameters.

The Unit for Biogeochemistry is now recruiting a Research Engineer to function as support to ongoing research activities and become our lead manager for field observations.

Main responsibilities
Be responsible for the organization, operation and maintenance of instruments (e.g., gas laser spectrometers, GCs, instruments for aerosol physics, chemisty and radiation) used both continuously at remote atmospheric observatories and for field campaigns in both our atmospheric and Arctic research tracks. This includes instrument programming, calibration, efficient data management and quality assurance.

Management of the logistics in day-to-day operations, preparations for and during field campaigns. This includes shipping and receiving, securing permits, keeping close contact with local observatory colleagues, and providing support to postdocs, PhD students and other participants in our field mission teams.

Introduce and mentor Master students, PhD students, postdocs and guest researchers to laboratory protocols and field operations, including our safety routines.

Master and document our methods for measurement, data processing and database management to ensure continuity, and to serve as a knowledge-bridge to new team members.

Support coordination of and participate in field campaigns at our atmospheric observatories and at sea; analyse samples in our university laboratories.

Contribute to development of methods and research projects.

Participate actively in development and maintenance of a sound work environment.

Qualification requirements
We are looking for someone with:

  • Least M.Sc. degree with focus on chemical/instrumental analysis, or corresponding competence.
  • Substantial experience of gas monitoring using laser spectroscopy (e.g. cavity ring-down spectroscopy or other modern laser-based techniques), maintenance and troubleshooting of analytical instruments.
  • Knowledge of data handling and solid coding skills (e.g. in Python, R and/or MatLab).
  • Experience with field sampling/campaigns is a merit.
  • Good organizational skills and high social competence.
  • Fluency in English (in speaking and in writing) is a requirement; basic knowledge of Swedish is an advantage (can be developed in an early phase of the employment)

Terms of employment
This is a full-time, indefinite-term position with a six-month trial period. Salaries at Stockholm University are determined individually; therefore, please indicate your requested salary. Start date as per agreement.
