Assistant Professor in Circular Economy and Innovation

 

Do you want to combine research and teaching to help shaping innovation processes towards a circular economy? At the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, Department of Planning a position as Tenure Track Assistant Professor in Circular Economy and Innovation is open for appointment from 1 September, 2022, or soon hereafter. The position will be based in Copenhagen. At Department of Planning, we have about 200 employees situated at the Aalborg and Copenhagen campus. The department provides excellent research and teaching in the field of planning, technology, and society to create a more sustainable future. We are interdisciplinary in the technical, natural, and social science disciplines and present a unique combination of social and technological understanding where digital and technological solutions merge with the needs of society. Our research creates the foundation for educating the young people of tomorrow, and as part of Aalborg University, the department rests on a socially engaging and problem-oriented strategy. Our educations are aimed at a job market and a society with increasing focus on technology, digitization, sustainability, and partnerships for a sustainable transition.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The position is affiliated with the research group Design for Sustainability (DfS). The DfS research group takes a designerly approach in addressing challenges of Sustainable Development concerning health and well-being, clean energy, and responsible consumption and production. The vision of the DfS research group is to contribute to circular and sustainable transition processes through innovative and action-oriented research.

The main research areas of the Associate Professor will be within the field of circular economy and innovation with special attention to circular economy, collaboration in value chains, staging of innovation processes, and user participation in innovation. The associate professor will contribute to research that supports sustainable innovation and transition processes. DfS’s research is based on close collaboration with external stakeholders: Businesses, public authorities and institutions, civil society organisations, and citizens.

Teaching will primarily be in Bæredygtigt Design (Sustainable Design - bachelor taught in Danish) and Sustainable Design (at master level which is taught in English), but also in other study programmes at the University.

Preferred applicants have documented research experience on sustainable transition, innovation, and engineering design. The successful candidates with a Master of Science in Engineering and an interdisciplinary Ph.D. with broad methodological foundation and strong analytical skills related to sustainable transition. Experience from working with Danish businesses and public authorities is an advantage. The successful candidate must have a high level of English language and communication skills, both in writing and verbally. Experience with problem-based learning, project supervision and coordination of teaching activities is an advantage. Teaching experience in a broad range of courses on both bachelor and master level related to sustainability, engineering design, and governance is expected. The candidate must have demonstrated ability to write project applications and attract funding within the areas of sustainable transition, and environmental and social sustainability. The tenure track assistant professor candidate has to demonstrate that she or he will be able to meet the requirements for holding an associate professor position at AAU.

Tenure-Track Assistant Professors are appointed for a period of six years with the prospect of performance-based promotion to a tenured position as Associate Professor. Tenure-Track Assistant Professors are expected to have international academic standing, demonstrating acclaimed competitive research, and/or have a recognized high potential for future impact.

In Tenure-Track employment, AAU attaches particular importance to:

• The candidate has a PhD degree or equivalent qualifications.
• The candidate can demonstrate a high degree of autonomy in their previous education and employment path.
• The candidate shows considerable potential and is among the best in their field.
• The candidate has academic experience from several universities and/or research institutions and preferably international experience.
• The candidate is a skilled communicator.
• The candidate writes and speaks English at the academic level.
• The candidate is expected to meet the criteria for permanent employment at AAU at the end of the tenure-track process.

If appointed on Tenure-Track, the Tenure-Track Assistant Professors will have an annual interview with the head of department. An internal assessment committee will conduct a mid-term evaluation after 3 years, and an external assessment committee will conduct a final review after 5.5 years. If the final review is positive, the candidate will be offered a tenured position as Associate Professor.

Qualification requirements:

Appointment as an Assistant Professor presupposes scientific qualifications at PhD–level or similar scientific qualifications. The research potential of each applicant will be emphasized in the overall assessment.

Appointment as an Assistant Professor cannot exceed a period of four years in total in a temporary position (appointment at Assistant Professor level cannot exceed a period of eight years in total in Denmark).

• Publications you wish to be considered by the assessment committee. You may attach up to 5 publications.
• A specification of your teaching qualifications relative to the teaching portfolio. If this is not enclosed you must include an explanation for its absence.
• References/recommendations.

Shortlisting will be applied. After the review of any objections regarding the assessment committee, the head of department, with assistance from the chair of the assessment committee, selects the candidates to be assessed. All applicants will be informed as to whether they will advance to assessment or not.

Employment is in accordance with the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Universities (the Appointment Order) and the Ministry of Finance's current Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities. Employment and salary are in accordance with the collective agreement for state-employed academics.
