The Department of Business Administration is the biggest department at the School of Business, Economics and Law, and conducts extensive research and is responsible for education programmes at first-cycle and second-cycle levels, as well as third-cycle education in the subject areas of Business Administration and Economic Geography. The Department has more than 140 employees and is divided into four sections: Industrial and Financial Management & Logistics (IFEL), Management & Organisation (including Economic Geography), Marketing, and Accounting. The Department also has an administrative and technical unit.

The advertised position as Associate senior lecturer in Economic Geography is hosted by the Management and Organisation section. Appointment as associate senior lecturer is the first step in the promotion system of the Department and the Faculty.

Subject description

Economic geography is an independent academic subject with educational responsibilities from Bachelor´s level to postgraduate level. In addition, representatives of the subject participate in the school’s Bachelor programs, as well as within the Master’s program “International Business and Trade” at the Graduate School.

The subject of economic geography focuses on the distribution and movement of economic activities in geographical space.  Regional economic transformation, international trade and investment flows, and the internationalization processes of manufacturing and service companies are examples of topics studied within economic geography.

 

Job assignments

The position as associate senior lecturer comprises maximum 50 % teaching and minimum 50 % research. The holder of the employment is expected to conduct research in accordance with the subject description above. The teaching obligations comprise teaching at all levels in independent courses in economic geography, in courses within the Bachelor program, as well as at the Graduate School. Course development, course management and supervision may also become parts of the teaching obligations. More particularly, the associate senior lecturer is expected to take responsibility for our teaching in the intersection between Economic Geography and International Business. Teaching is conducted in English.

 

Eligibility

Eligibility for appointment as associate senior lecturer is specified in the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 4 Section 4a, Appointments Procedure for Teachers at the University of Gothenburg Ref. V 2022/38, and Appointment Regulations for Teaching Staff at the School of Business, Economics and Law, University of Gothenburg Ref. V 2020/3440.

To be eligible for appointment as associate senior lecturer, the candidate must hold a doctoral degree in a relevant subject area. Preference should be given to candidates who were awarded their doctoral degree or achieved equivalent competence no more than five years prior to the application deadline for this appointment as associate senior lecturer. Those who have completed their doctoral degree or achieved equivalent competence prior to five years before the application deadline may also be eligible where special grounds exist, i.e. sick leave, parental leave, or similar circumstances.

 

Assessment

According to the Appointment Regulations for Teaching Staff at the School of Business, Economics and Law, University of Gothenburg Ref. V 2020/3440, the applicant shall be selected for the position who, based on an overall assessment of competence and potential for development, is judged to have the best qualities for performing the duties included in the appointment. In the assessment, the applicant's scientific skills and potential for further development within the position shall be considered as especially important. In the assessment, the applicant’s ability conduct teaching and potential for teaching development shall also be considered.

In addition, the following shall be considered as especially important aspects of the evaluation:

  • Documented experience of research and scientific publishing on international aspects of economic geography, and especially in the intersection between Economic Geography and International Business.
  • A well-designed research agenda of international standard within economic geography
  • Experience of a successfully planned and conduced empirical research project.

The applicant’s ability to cooperate internally and externally to perform the described tasks, as well as his/her general suitability, will also be taken into account in the assessment.

 

The appointment

In accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance (Högskoleförordningen SFS 1993:100) Chapter 4 Section 12a and 12b, an associate senior lecturer may be employed for a period of minimum four years, and at most six years, where the purpose of the appointment is to enable the lecturer to develop research autonomy and acquire the research and teaching qualifications necessary to fulfil the requirements for another more qualified teacher appointment (such as, senior lecturer).

This position is a fixed term employment of four years, 100% full time. The appointment may be extended if, due to sick leave, parental leave or other special grounds, additional time is needed to achieve the purpose of the appointment. Starting date by agreement.

 

Promotion

For promotion to Senior lecturer, an application for promotion must be submitted to the Department no later than six months before the expiration of the fixed term employment as associate senior lecturer.

According to the Department Regulations at the School Of Business, Economics and Law, University of Gothenburg GU 2021/3372, promotion to and employment as senior lecturer, shall be granted if external evaluators deem the candidate scientifically and pedagogically eligible for promotion, or is close to achieving this (within a year of termination of the appointment as associate senior lecturer), to associate professor (in Swedish: ‘docent’), and is suitable for such an appointment (Appointment to Associate Professor at the Department of Business Administration : Guidelines for Candidates and Internal Evaluators as per 2017/382).
