PHD SCHOLARSHIPS IN HUMAN-COMPUTER INTERACTION / HUMAN-CENTRED ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

At the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, Department of Computer Science, two fully-funded PhD scholarships are available within the Computer Science study program at Aalborg University, commencing on September 1, 2022 or shortly thereafter. The two PhD students will be working on Human-Computer Interaction / Human-Centred AI within a project which aims to make AI-driven decision-making more transparent to the public. The project is funded by a Carlsberg Foundation Young Researcher Fellowship (‘Algorithmic Explainability for Everyday Citizens’ CF21-0159). The Department of Computer Science features a broad range of synergistic activities within research and education in the general area of computer science, including curiosity-driven research and targeted research in collaboration with industrial partners, as well as traditional university education, with a unique problem- and project-based focus, and continued education and knowledge dissemination.

JOB DESCRIPTION

In this project, we will establish a thorough understanding of the needs of citizens in making sense of explanations on algorithmic-driven decisions and contribute a software platform that supports this aim. As such, the project leans heavily on interdisciplinarity, which is expected to be reflected in the profiles of the PhD students in the team. Concretely, we are interested in candidates with profiles ranging from (i) a user-centred focus, including experience in conducting user studies and analysing their results, (ii) a technical focus, including the development of interactive applications and possible experience with artificial intelligence more broadly.

In addition to the two PhD students, the project team will also consist of a postdoc and the principal investigator, Associate Professor Niels van Berkel. The project offers a large amount of freedom and autonomy in terms of research directions within the umbrella of Human-Computer Interaction. Scientific dissemination is expected to focus on venues such as CHI, CSCW, IUI, TOCHI, IJHCS, and the HCI journal.

For further information about the project, see: https://www.carlsbergfondet.dk/en/Forskningsaktiviteter/Bevillingsstatistik/Bevillingsoversigt/CF21_0159_Niels-van-Berkel.

The selected candidates will be part of the Human-Centered Computing research group, an ambitious and supportive research environment in which we study the design, development, and use of interactive computer systems through empirical and experimental methods. The group operates at the intersection between psychology and the social sciences, on the one hand, and computer science and technology, on the other.

Requirements:
The applicants must have a master’s degree in computer science, human-computer interaction, interaction design, artificial intelligence, or a closely related field. Due to the project’s interdisciplinary angle, the applicant must have a strong background in user-centred design and/or software development. Outstanding spoken and written communication skills in English are essential.

Application:
The application must contain:

1. A cover letter of max. 1 page, including (i) motivation for applying, (ii) preferred starting date (specifically if other than the project’s starting date of 1 September 2022), and (iii) a brief explanation of the applicant’s background.
2. A research statement (project description) roughly within the frame of ‘Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence’ of max. 2 pages (excl. references). This description should outline the applicant’s thoughts and ideas on possible research directions within the context of the topic outlined above.
3. CV.
4. Diploma and transcripts of records.
5. Other relevant information.

Interested applicants are encouraged to contact the project’s principal supervisor, Associate Professor Niels van Berkel, Department of Computer Science, e-mail: nielsvanberkel@cs.aau.dk, regarding the scientific aspects of the position.

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master's degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Technical Doctoral School of IT and Design in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed at regular points in time.

Shortlisting will be applied. This means that subsequent to the deadline for applications the head of department supported by the chair of the assessment committee will select candidates for assessment. All applicants will be informed whether they will be assessed or not.

For further information about stipends and salary as well as practical issues concerning the application procedure contact Ms. Sofie Jensen, The Doctoral School at The Technical Faculty of IT and Design, email: spj@adm.aau.dk, phone: +45 9940 3478.
