At the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, Department of Electronic Systems, a PhD stipend in Experimental Research in Integration of 5G and Non-Terrestrial Networks for extending Broadband Connectivity in Rural and Remote Areas is available within the general study programme Wireless Communications. The stipend is open for appointment from September 1, 2022, or soon as possible thereafter. In electronics engineering, Aalborg University is known worldwide for its high academic quality and the societal relevance of its research programmes. The Department of Electronic Systems consists of more than 200 employees, of which about 40 % are international and about 90 are enrolled PhD students. The Department hosts 620 students. The Department's excellent research infrastructures and facilities accentuate its global position in teaching and research. The Department's research centres around communication, antennas, control systems, AI, sound, cybersecurity and robotics. The Department plays an active role in translating discoveries and results into practical applications with industrial partners and IPR. The Department provides teaching for several BSc and MSc programmes using a problem- and project-based learning model.
JOB DESCRIPTION
Over the last years, the importance and need for broadband and high-speed connectivity has constantly increased. The COVID-19 pandemic has even accelerated this process towards a more connected society. But this holds mainly true for urban communities. In Europe, lack access still persists concerning, mainly, the most rural and remote areas. Those are the most challenging to address since they are the least commercially attractive.
Within this context, the PhD study will explore connectivity solutions aimed at bridging the digital divide, by providing robust, reliable, and secure broadband access for all in rural, agricultural, and remote areas, integrating Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN) with terrestrial 5G cellular networks and low-cost Internet of Things (IoT). In particular, the PhD work will focus on the design, development, and testing of multi-connectivity solutions applied to the connected agriculture and livestock transport.
The position is partly funded by the European Commission in the context of the HORIZON EUROPE framework programme, through the COMMECT project, which aims at bridging the digital divide and addressing the need of Rural Communities with Cost-effective and Environmental-Friendly Connectivity Solutions. The research will be done in tight collaboration with academic and industrial partners.
The PhD study is anticipated to cover the following aspects:
1) Definition and analysis of communication architectures and technical requirements for specific use cases in collaboration with end-users and ICT experts.
2) Design and development of 5G-satellite multi-connectivity solutions, including in-lab performance evaluation considering different satellite constellations, e.g., LEO, GEO.
3) Design and development of global 5G connectivity tools, including live QoS testing and performance assessment at European scale.
4) Investigation of the deployment of local, temporal, and green broadband networks with terrestrial or satellite backhaul.
5) Evaluation of the socio-economic and environmental impact of the developed connectivity solutions.
The PhD candidate is expected to have:
- Knowledge and experience with wireless access networks, with a solid understanding of 5G NR and Wi-Fi.
- Notions of the new Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) systems, including LEO, MEO and GEO constellations.
- Hands-on experience with operational wireless communication networks and equipment (modems, network analyzers) and performance analysis (latency, throughput, packet loss, reliability).
- Good software programming skills (MATLAB, C++, Linux, Python).
- Analytical and experimental skills, including abilities to address complicated problems, division of those into manageable sub-problems, and related problem-solving skills.
- Creative mindset and curiosity to research and develop new solutions.
- A high level of written and spoken English.

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master's degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Technical Doctoral School of IT and Design in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed at regular points in time.
Shortlisting will be applied. This means that subsequent to the deadline for applications the head of department supported by the chair of the assessment committee will select candidates for assessment. All applicants will be informed whether they will be assessed or not.
