Postdoctoral Position (m/f/d) | Chemical Biology

The ‘t Hart group at the Chemical Genomics Centre which is part of the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Physiology in Dortmund is looking for a post-doctoral candidate (m/f/d) in chemical biology to join our highly multidisciplinary chemical biology team for a project on cyclic disulfide mediated peptide uptake. Cyclic peptides are able to inhibit difficult targets such as protein-protein interactions and protein-RNA interactions with high potency. Although cyclization can improve cell permeability under specific conditions, most cyclic peptides are not able to pass cellular membrane effectively. To make cyclic peptides more widely applicable as chemical biology tools and drug candidates, strategies to overcome this barrier are required. Cyclic disulfides have been demonstrated to be able to undergo disulfide exchange with cell surface receptor thiols and by doing so mediate cell uptake of various cargoes. In this project you will focus on the synthesis of cyclic disulfide amino acids that will simultaneously facilitate peptide cyclization as well as provide a handle for cell permeation via the disulfide exchange pathway. The peptides will then be evaluated using cell biology and microscopy techniques.

Your profile

We are looking for an enthusiastic candidate who has recently obtained a PhD or is about to graduate. The candidate should have a good understanding of organic chemistry and experience with peptide synthesis. A good understanding of cell biology and experience with mammalian cell culture techniques will be preferred.

About us

The ‘t Hart group is a young and dynamic team of peptide chemists and biologists. Our aim is to explore the use of macrocyclic peptides to address difficult targets with a focus on RNA biology. We also develop methods to improve peptide properties using novel chemical methodology. We offer state-of-the-art facilities including fully equipped peptide/organic synthesis labs and cell biology facilities. Also see https://www.cgc.mpg.de/t-hart

Our offer

The position is available from the 1st of September 2022 and fully funded for 1 year. The candidate will be encouraged and supported in applying for further funding. Financial compensation will be carried out according to the public service remuneration scheme TVöD.

Your application

Applications should be sent (as PDF) to Birgit Apprecht (). Applications should include a motivation letter, a recent CV, copies of your certificates, and two names for reference. The deadline for application is the 31st of May 2022.
