PhD position - Low-cost interconnects for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC)

The EU-funded project NOUVEAU focuses on the development of low-cost interconnects for high temperature fuel cells. The state-of-the-art stainless steel (Crofer 22 APU) shows excellent performance at 650-900 °C, but is very costly. The goal of this project is the combination of a low-cost stainless steel with a coating applied at IEK-1, in order to reduce the cost of the interconnect without sacrificing performance. A variety of coating techniques is available for this purpose. The corrosion resistance of the deposited layers will be tested with our internal project partner.

Your tasks include:

  • Comparison and selection of suitable stainless steel alloys
  • Application of the coating via wet powder spraying, atmospheric plasma spraying and/or powder aerosol deposition
  • Optimization of the coating liquids and powders
  • Optimization of the applied layer with respect to adhesion, thermocyclability, density, conductivity, functionality
  • Characterization of the coating with regards to microstructure, constituents, crystal structure etc.
  • Processing the results and presenting at international project meetings, as well as writing scientific publications in the respective journals

Your Profile:

  • You have successfully obtained a degree (M.Sc. or equivalent) in the area of Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry or Physics
  • You have a solid background in the area of inorganic, non-metallic materials
  • You enjoy hands-on tasks in a laboratory
  • A background in ceramics processing or suspension-based coating techniques is desirable, but not mandatory
  • You show initiative and work independently
  • You enjoy working in a team and have good communications skills
  • You are fluent in English (oral and written), knowledge of the German language is a plus

Our Offer:

We work on the very latest issues that impact our society and are offering you the chance to actively help in shaping the change! We offer ideal conditions for you to complete your doctoral degree:

  • You work on a diverse and challenging topic in an interdisciplinary and international team
  • You obtain industry-relevant knowledge about the synthesis and characterization, as well as manufacturing and processing of ceramic materials
  • You are a part of a dynamic collaboration with another Institute in Jülich as well as further european partners in an EU-funded project
  • You participate in project meetings and present your work on national and international scientific conferences
  • You participate in the graduate school of the IEK (HITEC)
  • Your dissertation will be located at the excellence university RWTH Aachen
