Assistant Professor in Quantitative Biology and Data Integration

 The Institute of Biodynamics and Biocomplexity is looking for an ambitious and enthusiastic scientist to strengthen its research and teaching activities in the fields of quantitative biology, bioinformatics, and epigenomic data integration.

You will have the opportunity to establish your own independent research group and contribute to training the next generation of scientists at the Bachelor’s and Master’s level. The position will be embedded in three divisions: Developmental Biology, Theoretical Biology & Bioinformatics, and Genome Biology & Epigenetics. Furthermore, your group will be part of the Utrecht Bioinformatics Center (UBC), which coordinates bioinformatic activities across the Utrecht Science Park and unites more than 40 research groups with strong bioinformatics research.

We would particularly like to hear from candidates with a special interest in integrating large-scale datasets to reveal the hidden patterns and biological mechanisms underlying gene regulation, epigenetics, and/or developmental processes. Ideally, you will be helping to answer fundamental biological questions by utilizing novel bioinformatic and AI approaches to analyze single cell, multi-omics, Hi-C and other novel data sets.

You will be encouraged to acquire external funding for new research projects through national and international grant opportunities, and to supervise the research of Bachelor’s and Master’s students, PhD candidates, and postdoctoral fellows.

You will start as an Assistant Professor with a tenure track, with a career development plan that outlines the goals in research, teaching, and personal development. If your evaluation is positive, you will be offered a permanent position.

Qualifications

We are looking for a collaborative team player who is critically and creatively minded, organised and efficient. In addition, you have the following qualifications and characteristics:

  • You have a PhD in biology, data science, or a related field.
  • You have a proven track record in the successful application of quantitative methods (genomics, proteomics, microscopy) and data analysis.
  • You are able to demonstrate a clear vision of future research directions in your own field and have experience in publishing impactful science.
  • You are fluent in English, both in speech and writing.
  • You have affinity with teaching and supervision. Experience with innovation in education is appreciated.

Offer

  • a full-time tenure track position for five years, subject to a mid-term evaluation after approximately 2.5 years and an end-term evaluation. If evaluations are positive after five years, the position becomes permanent;
  • a PhD student, funded by the Biology Department;
  • a full-time gross salary - depending on previous qualifications and experience - ranging between €3,974 and €5,439 per month (scale 11 at the level of Assistant Professor (universitair docent; UD) according to the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities (CAO);
  • 8% holiday bonus and 8.3% end-of-year bonus;
  • a pension scheme, partially paid parental leave, and flexible employment conditions

     based on the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities.

In addition to the employment conditions laid down in the CAO for Dutch Universities, Utrecht University has a number of additional arrangements. These include agreements on professional development, leave arrangements, and sports. We also give you the opportunity to expand your terms of employment via the Employment Conditions Selection Model. This is how we like to encourage you to continue to grow.

About the organisation

As a member of the Institute of Biodynamics and Biocomplexity, you will become part of the dynamic and inspiring Life Sciences community at the Utrecht University campus. Interaction with other groups in the Institute (IBB, see below), Department, Faculty of Science, neighboring institutes (Utrecht Medical Center, Hubrecht Institute, Princess Maxima Center), national and international groups with similar research interests will be highly encouraged.

The Institute of Biodynamics and Biocomplexity

 is an inspiring and highly interactive scientific environment covering various disciplines ranging from Developmental Biology, Epigenetics, Cell Biology, Neurobiology, Biophysics, Bioinformatics, and Computational Biology. At the IBB we aim to answer fundamental questions of molecular biology such as: “What defines the identity of a cell?” and “How are genes switched on and off”.

The Department of Biology

 consists of 12 research divisions, which are organized within two institutes: the Institute of Biodynamics and Biocomplexity

. Each Institute promotes the maintenance of a high-quality and interactive research environment.

At the Faculty of Science

, there are 6 departments to make a fundamental connection with: Biology, Chemistry, Information and Computing Sciences, Mathematics, Pharmaceutical Sciences and Physics. Each of these is made up of distinct institutes that work together to focus on answering some of humanity’s most pressing problems. More fundamental still are the individual research groups – the building blocks of our ambitious scientific projects. Find out more about us

Utrecht University

 is a friendly and ambitious university at the heart of an ancient city. We love to welcome new scientists to our city – a thriving cultural hub that is consistently rated as one of the world’s happiest cities. We are renowned for our innovative interdisciplinary research and our emphasis on inspirational research and excellent education. We are equally well-known for our familiar atmosphere and the can-do mentality of our people. This lively and inspiring academic environment attracts professors, researchers, and PhD candidates from all over the globe, making both the University and the Faculty of Science a vibrant international and wonderfully diverse community.
