Assistant/Associate Professor of Smart Industry and Production Logistics

 Section Transport Engineering & Logistics (TEL), Dept. of Maritime & Transport Technology, invites applicants for an Assistant/Associate Professorship with a focus on Smart Industry and Production Logistics. 

Global challenges on sustainability, limited resource availability, pollution, and energy efficiency force industry to rethink current production & manufacturing processes and practices. New technological trends in the areas of smart industry, information & communication systems and digitization, autonomous systems (robotics), RFID, IoT, and AI provide opportunities for creating new ways of designing such systems. There is a strong need for developing insights in how the performance of next generation industrial production logistics systems and processes can be impacted, taking into account their large-scale and interconnected nature.

Embedded in the Dept. of Maritime & Transport Technology, with this position you set up new research lines inspired by industrial supply chain and production challenges, with a particular links to the ports & maritime area. You bring in your own methodological perspective/central driving idea as basis for your research and pursue these ideas towards both qualitative and quantitative assessment of new smart industry (production) concepts. Your directions address production logistics challenges at supply chain level and/or industrial (production/manufacturing) site / plant / facility level, making it possible to relate them to concepts such as Factories of the Future, (Maritime) Industry 4.0.

As assistant/associate professor, you will be entrusted responsibilities for initiating and carrying out high-level research projects and publishing research in leading journals. You become part of a section with a well-balanced range of expertises relevant for tackling upcoming smart industry challenges (including transport logistics, operations research, control, and mechanical & maritime engineering). As such, you will create addd value by working together with these colleagues, as well as relevant industrial and academic partners, to position your specific perspectives, apply for national and international research funding, and shape the research area of smart industry and production logistics. Bringing in practical experience within the production or maritime industry is highly valued. 

As part of your assistant/associate professorship, you contribute to relevant MSc education, such as the MSc track Multi-Machine Engineering (hosted by Section TEL), which educates the fundamentals of large-scale system design and operation, and their applications in the complex logistics and production area. This track adopts an interdisciplinary perspective, in which (1) mechanical systems expertise, (2) operations & maintenance, and (3) multi-machine system interactions are brought together for increasing efficiency, safety, and sustainability. You have the opportunity to develop courses and supervise Master students in their final year, reflecting the developments of your research, involving both online and practical teaching competences. In addition, you will supervise PhD candidates in their development towards independent, self-reflective researchers.      

Requirements

Applicants should have the following qualifications:

  • A PhD (obtained, or soon to obtain) and strong track record in one or more of the following domains: Industry 4.0/5.0, production logistics, manufacturing systems engineering, supply chain engineering, smart industry, industrial automation / control, industrial engineering, mechanical / maritime engineering;

  • Demonstrate the potential to initiate, acquire, execute, and coordinate research projects, including development of a vision on a specific new research line that fits in the Section TEL and M&TT department;

  • Have a clear vision on modern engineering education, and being able to inspire students and develop their passion for and knowledge of smart industry and production logistics;

  • Experience with and ability to work in teams in an academic, interdisciplinary environment with engineers as well as people in other disciplines;

  • Be proficient in English, and, for foreign candidates, the willingness to learn the Dutch language;

  • Have experience with the academic environment and awareness for the inclusiveness values of TU Delft.

A tenure track position is offered for a maximum of six years. Tenure Track is a process leading up to a permanent appointment with the prospect of becoming an Associate Professor. Based on performance indicators agreed upon at the start of the appointment, a decision will be made at the end of the fifth year whether to offer you a permanent faculty position.

The salary for a Tenure Track (Assistant Professor) position is min. €3.974 to max. €6.181 per month gross.

For exceptionally strong candidates, a shortened tenure track period or Associate Professor position can be considered.

For an Associate Professor position different terms of employment apply. Depending on background and experience, the salary can range from min. € 5.506 to max. €7.362 per month gross.

Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities. The TU Delft offers a customisable compensation package, a discount on health insurance and sport memberships, and a monthly work costs contribution. Flexible work schedules can be arranged.
