The Department of Arts and Cultural Sciences at Lund University is a multi-faceted environment for research and higher education, with approximately 90 employees and 1,700 students each year. At the Department of Arts and Cultural Sciences there are several research areas and first, second and third-cycle study programmes, divided into nine divisions and two centres.
Subject environment
The position is located at the Division of ALM (Archival Studies, Information Studies and Museology) and Digital Cultures, which is part of the Department of Art and Cultural Sciences. At Lund University, Information Studies is based on a human cultural studies tradition with an emphasis on the study of contemporary phenomena, particularly those relating to information and digitalisation. The research at the division is diverse and characterised by critical analysis of the digitalisation of culture and society. It covers research themes such as information infrastructure, cultural heritage institutions, cultural policy, consumption and digital everyday life, changing literacies, material culture, biohacking, and aesthetic and artistic forms of expression. These themes are explored, for example, through ethnography, digital, visual and more explorative methods. The division conducts education in archival studies, information studies and museology from first-cycle education through to Master’s programmes, in addition to the Bachelor's programme in Digital Cultures. The division also offers third-cycle education in information studies.
Work duties
The appointment shall provide opportunities for teaching and research qualifications. The position shall prioritise the development of research qualifications. The scope of the position shall also provide an opportunity to complete five weeks of training in teaching and learning in higher education. The employee is expected to actively participate in the joint activities of the department and the division, and to contribute to information studies as a research subject. Teaching is expected to be carried out primarily within the division's Master’s programme in ALM and the Bachelor's programme in Digital Cultures and other related subjects at the department. The successful applicant must be able to teach in Swedish, Danish or Norwegian, as well as English within two years of the first day of employment.
Qualification requirements
A person qualified for appointment as an associate senior lecturer is a person who has been awarded a PhD or has the corresponding research expertise. Primary consideration shall be given to the person who has been awarded a PhD or achieved the equivalent expertise within five years of the deadline for the application for employment as an associate senior lecturer. However, a person who has been awarded a PhD or achieved the equivalent expertise at an earlier date may also be considered if there are exceptional circumstances. Exceptional circumstances include sick leave, parental leave or other similar circumstances.
Additional requirements
A person qualified for the appointment is a person who has been awarded a PhD in Information Studies or other relevant third-cycle subject and has carried out documented research on issues relevant to research in Information Studies.
Assessment criteria
A good ability to develop and carry out high-quality research teaching expertise
The assessment will also focus on the applicant’s ability to achieve sufficient qualifications for promotion to senior lecturer within the time frame of the associate senior lecturer position.
Equal attention shall be given to the assessment of teaching and research expertise regardless of how they are weighted.
As a basis for the assessment of the applicant's qualifications, the applicant is to attach a research plan for the research they intend to carry out in the position. Only applicants whose research plan and previous experience can strengthen the Information Studies research environment will be considered for the appointment to associate senior lecturer.
Desired qualifications in descending order
- a documented ability to conduct high-quality research following the completion of a PhD and to obtain research funding in competition
- documented teaching experience in Information Studies or teaching that has covered issues of relevance to Information Studies
- a documented good ability to cooperate in education and research

Terms of employment
Four-year, fixed-term position in accordance with Chapter 4, Section 12 of the Higher Education Ordinance with the opportunity for promotion to senior lecturer. The University applies individual salary setting.
Promotion
During the period of employment, an associate senior lecturer may apply for promotion to indefinite-term employment as a senior lecturer if they are qualified for the position and are assessed to meet the qualification requirements and assessment criteria below. Applications may only be submitted once and must be submitted to the Joint Faculties of Humanities and Theology no later than six months prior to the end of the appointment.
Qualification requirements
- a PhD or equivalent research expertise or other professional expertise of relevance to the subject matter and work duties of the post
- demonstrated teaching expertise
- completion of at least five weeks of training in teaching and learning in higher education or equivalent knowledge acquired by other means.
Additional requirements for promotion
For promotion, the applicant must be qualified to the extent that they meet the requirements for appointment as an associate professor in accordance with the guidelines of the Joint Faculties of Humanities and Theology, and they must also have applied for and been awarded external research funding in competition.
For employment as senior lecturer the following is specifically required:
- a good national and international standing as a researcher,
- good teaching ability, including a good ability to conduct, develop and lead teaching and other educational activities at different levels and using a variety of teaching methods,
- an ability to participate in supervising doctoral students to achieve a PhD,
- an ability to cooperate with wider society and to communicate his or her activities as well as otherwise leading and developing activities.
