Junior research professor in the modelling of energy systems and complex flow phenomena through CFD simulation

 Department: Faculty of Applied Engineering

Regime Full-time

The University of Antwerp is a dynamic, forward-thinking, European university. We offer an innovative academic education to more than 20 000 students, conduct pioneering scientific research and play an important service-providing role in society. We are one of the largest, most international and most innovative employers in the region. With more than 6000 employees from 100 different countries, we are helping to build tomorrow's world every day. Through top scientific research, we push back boundaries and set a course for the future – a future that you can help to shape.

As part of its dynamic research policy, and supported by the University Research Fund (Dutch: Bijzonder Onderzoeksfonds, BOF), the research group Energy and Materials in Infrastructure and Buildings and the Department of Electromechanical Engineering of the Faculty of Applied Engineering have the following full-time vacancy:

Junior research professor in the modelling of energy systems and complex flow phenomena through CFD simulation (tenure track ZAPBOF)

Position

As a member of the Senior Academic Staff (Dutch: Zelfstandig Academisch Personeel, ZAP), you will contribute to the University of Antwerp’s three core tasks: research, services and education. Your role may also include organisational and managerial aspects. As a research professor, your role will consist primarily of academic research with some limited involvement in the educational programmes for a maximum of 5 years.

The research group EMIB (Energy and Materials in Infrastructure and Buildings) of the Faculty of Applied Engineering is a strong multi-disciplinary team which focuses on two specific domains: 1. material use and road infrastructure (RERS: road engineering research section) and 2. energy systems in the built environment (BiRD: Buildings, Installations: Retrofit and Design).

The latter group is known for its expertise on comfort installations and thermal energy grids in the built environment. Together with its large industrial network, including amongst others own spin-offs (HySopt) and larger international players (Autodesk, Beckhoff, BDR Thermea, Aalberts, …), it is able to translate its research towards valorisation.

Besides experimental work with respect to prototype testing of HVAC-components in the lab, the group focuses on modelling and design optimization of energy systems in buildings, in which a multidisciplinary approach is deployed:

  • Thermal and hydraulic system modelling
  • Building physics, user behaviour and comfort modelling
  • Socio-economic modelling and life-cycle assessment

Research

  • You will expand high-quality scientific research in the modelling of energy systems and complex flow phenomena through CFD-simulation, with a specific interest in at least one of the following areas:
    • Heating, ventilation and air conditioning
    • Complex flow phenomena in ducts and pipes (two-phase flow, slug flow, pollution and gas dispersion…)
    • Water, steam and/or gas distribution networks
    • Thermo-acoustic comfort

Your CFD-expertise is highly complementary and a clear added value to the present research activities in the research group. As such, you will have the opportunity to develop your own research, while profiting from both the support of the current team members and the collaboration with the other senior academic staff members in the research group, the faculty and the university at large.

  • You initiate new lines of research and coordinate the progress of scientific research projects.
  • You will acquire and manage national and international research funding.
  • You will publish in international journals and specialist literature.
  • You will develop an international scientific network.
  • You will supervise PhD students and postdoctoral researchers.

Services

  • You will play a role in the provision of both academic services and service to society, within the institution and externally. You will participate in student recruitment, boards and committees, popular science communication, and so on.

Education

  • You will provide high-quality education. Your limited teaching role will evolve along with the study programmes. You will supervise bachelor’s and master’s theses in your domain. In addition, your teaching assignment may in time include a course such as 4-Applied Fluid Mechanics (2nd year of the bachelor’s programme, 3 ECTS).
  • You will play a role in developing activating, student-centred and competence-driven programme components and study programmes.

Organisation and leadership

  • You will accept coordinating responsibilities in the core tasks of research, services and/or education and you will contribute to policy.
  • Your leadership style is motivating and coaching. You will be attentive to your employees’ growth and development processes.

Profile

  • You hold a PhD in Engineering, Physics or Chemistry.
  • Preferably you can demonstrate a minimum of two years of postdoctoral experience (when you start work, at the latest).
  • You have an international academic portfolio and you conduct high-quality

academic research.

  • Your research qualities are in line with the faculty and university research policies.
  • Your teaching competences are in line with the University of Antwerp’s educational vision. You are motivated to develop your teaching skills further through the professionalisation opportunities available.
  • If you do not speak Dutch, the administrative language of the university, you should be willing to obtain a CEFR B2 level of proficiency in Dutch within five years after your appointment. As soon as you take on teaching duties as a programme component coordinator, you should be able to demonstrate a CEFR C1 level of proficiency in the language of instruction. The University of Antwerp supports international staff members through an integration trajectory and offers tailor-made language coaching in compliance with Flanders’ statutory language regulations
  • You demonstrate leadership potential and organisational skills.
  • You act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity and cooperation.

What we offer

  • We offer a full-time ZAPBOF appointment as a tenure track assistant professor for a period of five years. After a favourable evaluation, a permanent appointment (tenure) as an associate professor will follow.
  • The tenure track ZAPBOF period is followed by a standard position as a member of the Tenured Senior Academic Staff with a mixture of teaching, research and service responsibilities.
  • Your gross monthly salary is calculated according to the pay scales for Senior Academic Staff.
  • We offer an attractive starter package consisting of a four-year PhD project and €25 000 of consumables.
  • You will receive ecocheques, internet-connectivity allowance, and a bicycle allowance or a full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting.
  • The planned start date is 1 February 2023 or as soon as possible after that date.
  • You will do most of your work at Campus Groenenborger in a dynamic and stimulating working environment.
