The Max Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics (www.mpi-hd.mpg.de) in Heidelberg (Germany) is one of 86 research institutes of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science e.V. (MPG). The Division of Stored and Cooled Ions (Director: Prof. Dr. Klaus Blaum) at the Max- Planck-Institut für Kernphysik offers a PhD position (m/f/d) with the aim to develop a PhD project within the PENTATRAP experiment at the Max Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics. The PENTATRAP Experiment runs in the division “Stored and Cooled Ions” led by Prof. Dr. Klaus Blaum and is supervised by Dr. Sergey Eliseev (MPIK Heidelberg, Germany).
Working field / your tasks
- Preparation and conduction of measurements of the masses of various nuclides that are relevant to fundamental physics studies
- Further development of the control system in order to adjust it to the requirements of new measurements
- Development of new measurement methods that would lead to the improvement of the precision of planned mass measurements
- Data analysis and interpretation of obtained results
Requirements
- Successfully completed study of physics (diploma, Master of Science or equivalent degree)
- Some knowledge of the programming language Python and ComSol simulation software
- Familiarity with laboratory equipment as turbo and scroll pumps, cold heads, power supplies, rf generators, oscilloscopes et al.
- Other computational skills are welcome
Our offer
The candidate will be offered to defend his/her doctoral work at the Heidelberg University (https://www.uni-heidelberg.de).
The contract period is initially limited for 3 years. The position will be filled at the earliest convenience.
The salary will be paid according to the collective agreement for civil service employees in Germany (TVöD).
