DTU Management at the Technical University of Denmark invites applications for a 3-year PhD position in the Network modelling group of the Division of Transport.
If you are interested in urban transportation systems, have a background in transportation, logistics, mathematical modelling, behavioral modelling or operations research and wish to establish a scientific career within this field, this PhD position is the right one for you. In the project you will push the frontier by developing Dynamic Traffic Assignment (DTA) models that embed realistic and consistent behavioural modelling incorporating considerations of travel time reliability.
Urban transportation networks are plagued by traffic congestion and contribute to a significant share of societal energy consumption and emissions. Addressing this critical challenge through sustainable solutions for future urban mobility requires the development of robust, realistic, and accurate models of the transportation network. DTA models area a promising approach for this, by combining behavioural models of route and departure time choice (demand) with models that capture the temporal dynamics of congestion (supply). However, the critical issue of variability in the transportation system (due to weather, incidents, special events, etc.) has not yet been addressed, and this will be the purpose of your project. Moreover, you will advance the state-of-the-art by developing DTA models with behaviourally realistic route choice models incorporating travel time reliability, while considering the dynamic and stochastic nature of network travel times.
Responsibilities and qualifications
Your overall focus will be to develop and implement models and solution algorithms for DTA that extend the start-of-the-art to incorporate behaviourally realistic models of route choice (including user perceptions of travel time reliability) and consider the day-to-day variability in travel times. Utilising unique large-scale data sources, you will also apply and calibrate these to a real-world network.
You will work with an inter-disciplinary team of experts within the topic and be part of the Network Modelling group within the Division of Transport at DTU Management. The division also consists of research groups within transport demand, machine learning for smart mobility, transport economics and transport psychology. As part of your responsibilities, you will disseminate your research through journal publications and international conferences and participate in teaching activities.
This project is a partnership with the Israel Institute of Technology (Technion), and you are expected to do an extended research visit to Professor Shlomo Bekhor at Technion.
You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree. The degree should be within Transportation Modelling, Applied Mathematics and Statistics, Data Science, Behavioural Studies, or related.
Furthermore:
- Knowledge in statistics and probabilities is required
- Transportation modelling disciplines in your educational background are preferable
- Programming capabilities are preferable, e.g. in Python
The following soft skills are also important:
- Good communication skills in English, both written and orally
- Willingness to engage in group-work with a multi-national team

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
