 Docent, University Teacher Kirsi Gröndahl-Yli-Hannuksela is looking for a PhD student (Doctoral Researcher) to join her laboratory for a fixed-term position on a project “Pregnancy, delivery and streptococci” funded by the Academy of Finland.

Research group has an ongoing clinical study in collaboration with the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Turku University Hospital. The project aims to understand the prevalence of asymptomatic carriage of beta haemolytic streptococci during pregnancy. In addition, the association of streptococcal carriage with possible complications of the mother or the newborn is investigated. Doctoral Researcher will be working in this project at the Institute of Biomedicine. Position includes laboratory research on the fields of microbiology and molecular biology (such as analysing the clinical study samples, bacterial identification, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, whole genome sequencing and metagenomics/microbiome analytics).

The successful applicant is expected to begin in October 2022, but starting date is negotiable. The duration of the position is two years with a possibility for an extension.

Qualifications

The applicant must have a higher university degree (e.g. Master’s degree) in biomedicine, microbiology or other equivalent field. The candidate should be highly motivated to aim at PhD, have good communication skills and ability to work productively. Self-initiative and preciseness are appreciated. Fluency in English is a requirement. Merit is given to applicants who have previous lab experience especially in microbiology, molecular biology or genomics.

The qualification requirements of the position are available on the University of Turku Rules of Procedure. In case the selected candidate does not yet have the right to study for a doctoral degree at the University of Turku, the title of Project Researcher will be used at first, and the study right for a doctoral degree should be applied in the next suitable call: University of Turku Graduate School (UTUGS) and Doctoral Programmes

Salary

The salary offered is determined in accordance with the university salary system for teaching and research personnel. For a doctoral/project researcher, the salary is at levels 2-4 on the job demands chart, where the task-specific salary component is approx. 2108,40–2628,85 euro per month. In addition, a personal work performance component will be paid. The personal performance component is a 6% – 50% of the task-specific base salary. A six (6) month trial period applies to the positions.
