Information about the project
Focus in this project will be on understanding the production of probiotic yeast with high quality performance. The overall goal for the project is to define the relation between cultivation conditions and cellular quality at single-cell resolution and apply the short-term adaptation principle to produce probiotic yeast of high and consistent quality. Furthermore, in the project relevant model systems to evaluate cell quality in relation to probiotic and pharmaceutical use will be defined. Based on data from RNA-sequencing on population and single-cell level we will elucidate molecular mechanisms and the distribution of subpopulations and potential influence on the probiotic and pharmaceutical functionality.

Information about the division
The post doc position is placed at the Division of Industrial Biotechnology within the Department of Biology and Biological Engineering at Chalmers University of Technology. The Industrial Biotechnology group is a young, dynamic and international group of researchers established in 2008 and counts now around 40 members. The common denominator of the research activities in the division is to optimize the use of renewable raw materials for the sustainable production of fuels, chemicals, materials and other products.

The research performed within the group spans from fundamental research, technology development and lab-scale application: this ensures deep knowledge of the studied systems, leading to rational development and optimization of the respective applications. We discover, engineer and apply enzymes and microorganisms. The division has an extensive instrument platform for analytics, molecular biology, protein production and purification, fermentation which are all available for the project. In addition, core facilities with advanced equipment are available within both the Department and at the University campus.

Major responsibilities
You will have the inspiring task of building understanding of the role of heterogeneity in fermentation processes and cellular strategies coping with perturbations from the environment. We are looking for a post doc that are dedicated to develop cutting-edge methodology for the project and who can put acquired data into a theoretical framework. Another important aspect involves collaboration within academia and with society at large. The position is meritorious for future research duties within academia as well as industry/the public sector.

Qualifications
You should have a PhD in Systems Biology or Biotechnology/Bioengineering, or related disciplines. Knowledge in Systems biology, bioinformatics and understanding of yeast physiology is necessary.

Experience in one or several of the following areas are beneficial:
Experience with collection and analysis of large omic data sets
Experience in genome editing and studies on single cell level
Insights into probiotics and evaluation of probiotic potential.

You need to be self-motivated, enthusiastic, creative, well-organised and have good technical abilities. You should be able to put up new experimental procedures and be good in finding new solutions to technical problems. You enjoy solving complex problems in collaboration with other researchers. It is beneficial if you have a keen interest in the interpretation of complex data.

The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. If Swedish is not your native language, Chalmers offers Swedish courses.

Contract terms
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of two years (1+1).
