Postdoctoral researcher in history didactics

The Department of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies is looking for a postdoctoral researcher in history didactics. The position is located at the research environment History and Education at the Department of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies, Umeå University, and is financed by Umeå School of Education.

The research environment History and Education is highly international and includes research and postgraduate education in both educational history and history didactics. The research environment is characterized by, among other things, frequent visiting scholar exchanges and long-term research collaborations with prominent research environments. The research group directs several externally funded projects, arranges conferences and runs the peer reviewed e-journal Nordic Journal of Educational History, which is published in collaboration with other history of education research environments in Sweden. Locally, the research group collaborates closely with Umeå Research Centre for Social Studies Didactics.

Project description and working tasks
This postdoc position is part of a new career program, initiated by Umeå School of Education. It is linked to the research area History and education but aims also to strengthen educational research at Umeå University. As a postdoctoral researcher in the career program, you will be part of an interdisciplinary network in addition to your regular research context. We encourage international research exchange visits during the postdoc years.

For more information about the career program, see:
https://www.umu.se/lararhogskolan/forskning/karriarprogram

The postdoc is expected to conduct research on school-related history didactics. The job tasks consist mainly of research but also include research-related administrative tasks and teaching up to 20 % of the extent of employment.

Eligibility
A person who has been awarded a doctorate or a foreign qualification deemed to be the equivalent of a doctorate, in a subject within history or behavioural science that is relevant for the position, qualifies for employment as a postdoctoral researcher. This eligibility requirement must be met no later than the time at which the appointment decision is made.

Proficiency in written and spoken Swedish and or English is also required, as is a good ability to collaborate with others. Swedish is the main working language at the department, but English is also used when necessary.

Additional useful qualifications
Since appointment as a postdoctoral researcher is a career-development position for junior researchers, we are primarily interested in applicants who completed their doctoral degree no more than three years before the application deadline. If there are special reasons, an applicant who has completed their degree earlier than that may be considered. Special reasons include absence due to illness, parental leave, clinical practice, appointments of trust for a trade union organisation or other similar circumstances, and for relevant duties/assignments within the subject area.

Research expertise is the evaluation criterion. When research expertise is assessed, particular importance will be given to the applicant’s research plan attached to the application. The plan will be assessed with regard to the quality and feasibility of the proposed research, the chosen topic’s relevance to school-related history didactics, and the degree of originality. Importance will also be given to research expertise demonstrated by independent research production including the PhD thesis.

A full application can be written in either Swedish or English and should include:

  • A short description of your research interests and your motivation for applying for the present position (1-2 pages)
