Research Associate in the field of Semantics & Ontologies

 Your Job:

In our team you will work collaboratively on:

  • Building, modeling and customizing structured semantic data, mid- and top-level alignment of semantic datasets
  • Data description and integration using knowledge graphs
  • Merging of different semantic data sets by means of manual "ontology matching" and "ontology alignment"; semi-automatic ontology mapping, e.g. by means of machine learning methods
  • Supporting communities in the domain specific aspects of ontology development e.g. through the organization and moderation of ontology interest groups
  • Support the dissemination of developed tools and concepts within workshops and specific training activities
  • Development of new tools as well as adaption of existing tools for visualization and modeling of domain-specific ontologies
  • Presentation of the work at conferences and preparation of manuscripts for publication
  • Supervision of student projects and B.Sc./M.Sc. theses

Your Profile:

We are looking for motivated colleagues who are interested in supporting science through pragmatic solutions. For this you will bring:

  • University degree (Master, Diploma or equivalent) in Information Science/Data Science/Computer Science or other relevant fields. A doctorate or equivalent working experience is desirable but not mandatory
  • Extensive working experience in relevant semantic web technologies (e.g. OWL,RDF,RDFS,SPARQL) and relevant tools and frameworks (e.g. Apache Jena, Protégé, VocBench,Vue)
  • Working experience in of web-relevant scripting languages (XML,HTML,JavaScript) as well as programming languages (e.g. Python, C+, Java,Ruby) and knowledge of common database systems is an advantage
  • Knowledge of common top-level ontologies such as BFO or GFO and related initiatives like the OBO Foundry
  • Very good communication skills in English (written & oral)
  • Ability to think analytically and conceptually as well as enjoy working in an international and interdisciplinary team where development processes are driven cooperatively
  • Ability to write scientific texts for publication and reporting
  • Willingness to support scientists with respect to metadata & research data management

We offer you an exciting and varied role in an international and interdisciplinary working environment. The position is initially for a fixed term of 3 years, with possible long-term prospects. Salary and social benefits will conform to the provisions of the Collective Agreement for the Public Service (TVöD-Bund). Depending on the applicant`s qualifications and the precise nature of the tasks, salary grade 13 TVöD-Bund.
