 The Administrative Headquarters of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science e.V. (MPG) is a self-governing science organization mainly financed by public funds from the federal government and the federal states. In overall 86 research institutes in Germany and abroad, it conducts basic research in the natural sciences, life sciences, social sciences and humanities. The General Administration is inviting applications for a scientific officer to join the Science Policy and Strategy Processes Department in Munich. The position is open immediately.


Senior Scientific Officer Life Sciences and Medicine

In order to provide support to the President and the scientific governing bodies of the Max Planck Society, as well as facilitate internal scientific discourses, you will continuously, and across disciplines, identify challenges and opportunities of scientific development and draw out their implications for society by
  • Analyzing and processing thematic developments in the international scientific literature with a focus on life sciences, cognitive sciences, and medicine
  • Evaluating international prospective studies, strategies, and roadmaps
  • Following and participating in discourse processes and policy development on ethical, legal, and societal implications of new technologies.
Job Description
The President’s Scientific Officer for Life Sciences and Medicine works at the interface of science and policy and is embedded in the Science Policy and Strategy Processes Department. In this role you will review scientific information, present it in formats suitable for the diverse tasks of the MPG leadership, and contribute to the strategic development of the MPG and its science policy.


Your Tasks
  • Drafting statements and reports on significant scientific publications and trends for the President and the management of the MPG
  • Close networking with Max Planck researchers and their partners and participation in internal, national and international workshops and conferences
  • Scientific input to speeches, lectures and committee work of the President
  • Organization of scientific discussion groups and symposia of the MPG as well as analysis of external scientific conferences and symposia
  • Continuous analysis of the research portfolio of the MPG and comparison with international developments
  • Participation in the external presentation of the MPG in questions of the scientific portfolio and the importance of basic research for society as a whole
  • Scientific coordination of MPG statements on socially relevant science topics and development of science-related policies
  • Participation in measures for strategic communication regarding transfer of basic research to society

Your Profile
You have outstanding scientific qualifications and experience, a strong sense of language and a keen interest in following ongoing developments in current research in a well-founded and up-to-date manner, identifying new trends at an early stage, and reporting on them across disciplines. You are highly motivated to work in an innovative team of experts and to develop new forms and methods of analyzing and presenting scientific results and trends.


Requirements
  • Successfully completed a PhD and at least five years of experience in active research and in writing and publishing in the life sciences, cognitive sciences or medicine
  • Extensive knowledge of interdisciplinary scientific developments in current research and enthusiasm to learn and report on them continuously
  • Excellent and proven analytical skills and a strong talent for summarizing new and complex scientific issues quickly, clearly and comprehensibly for different audiences
  • Suitable candidates must enjoy working with people, and possess excellent written and spoken language skills, both in German and English
  • High degree of initiative and ability to work independently
  • Excellent communication skills, also in complex discourse processes with different stakeholders
  • Proven experience in the use of web-based tools and databanks including the analysis of scientific literature

Our Offer
Depending on your previous experience and the tasks assigned to you, we offer a salary up to group 14 within the public service pay scale (TVöD), as well as various social benefits. The workplace is located in the center of Munich and is easily accessible by public transport. The willingness to travel regularly is required. The position is initially limited to two years.
