The PhD students will be nominated for participation in the WASP AI Graduate School http://wasp-sweden.org/graduate-school/ai-graduate-school-courses/.  After our nominations, the final selection of the candidates will be done by WASP. The projects are expected to start on December 1, 2022, but the starting date is flexible.

About the department
The Department of Mathematical Sciences at the Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg is the largest department of mathematics in Sweden. We have an international environment with frequent exchanges with other universities around the world. We provide a friendly, creative, and supportive atmosphere with a steady flow of international guests. Equality and diversity are substantial foundations in all our activities. We work actively to be a parent-friendly organization. More information about us can be found on our website: http://www.chalmers.se/math/ More details about our activities within AI are available at AI@MS http://www.chalmers.se/en/departments/math/research/research-groups/AIMS/

Major responsibilities
You will be enrolled in a graduate program at the Department of Mathematical Sciences and you will be part of the AI@MV research environment as well as the national WASP-AI graduate school. As a PhD student in Mathematical Sciences you have opportunities for many inspiring conversations, a lot of autonomous work and some travel. You are expected to develop your own ideas and communicate scientific results orally as well as in written form. In addition, the positions will normally include 20% departmental work, mostly teaching duties.

Qualifications
Applicants must have a strong background in mathematics or mathematical statistics. They must have obtained a master's degree or a 4-year bachelor's degree, or expect to complete such a degree by December 1, 2022.

Programming skills in a general purpose language, such as Python, Julia or C/C++ will be highly relevant.

You will be considered for both projects but it is important that you mention in the application your specific research interests and indicate which of the projects you are most interested in.  You should also include all relevant work such as bachelor's or master's thesis and articles (provide an English summary if necessary) that you have authored or co-authored.  Evidence of mathematical problem solving skills is significant, besides course grades.

As Chalmers is a highly international environment, proficiency in written and spoken English is necessary.

If Swedish is not your native language, Chalmers offers Swedish courses.

Contract terms
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of five years.
