3 Postdoctoral Researcher Positions (m/f/d) at the Dioscuri Centre
for Structural Dynamics of Receptors (Krakow, Poland) – Structural Biology

Three postdoctoral positions are available at the Dioscuri Centre for Structural Dynamics of Receptors, led by Przemyslaw Nogly at the Jagiellonian University (Krakow, Poland), to investigate the molecular mechanisms of photoreceptor proteins. The Nogly Lab applies state-of-the-art structural biology techniques, including time-resolved serial crystallography at synchrotron and X-ray Free Electron Laser to capture proteins' structural dynamics at high spatiotemporal resolution. The structural insights are complemented by biophysical, functional and theoretical studies. The current focus of the lab is to define the structural and mechanistic basis of light perception, energy conversion and signaling output in bacteria and plants. For our recent work, please see Mous et al., Science, (2022) "Dynamics and mechanism of a light-driven chloride pump." Ongoing research, funded within the generous Dioscuri Programme initiated by Max Planck Society and National Science Center, will reveal broader principles of how light is utilized by determining the dynamics of additional photoreceptor proteins. Experimentally derived "molecular movies" of protein in action will provide unique insights into structural transitions and a basis for studying the driving forces behind protein function.

Ph.D. in biochemistry, biophysics, structural biology, or a related field is preferred. However, candidates with a background in chemistry or physics and demonstrated interest in protein mechanisms would also be considered. We are looking for candidates with experience in protein biochemistry, crystallography, structural data processing and analysis, and biophysical characterization. One of the positions can be dedicated to data processing and analysis (without experimental work). Exciting crystallographic data is already available for processing and analysis.
The working language is English and we will assist in finding accommodation and dealing with the administration to ensure a smooth start in the beautiful city of Krakow.

What we expect from you

  • A team-oriented, flexible personality driven by curiosity and ambition
  • A PhD in biology, physics or chemistry
  • Experience in protein biochemistry, crystallography, biophysical characterization or structural data processing and analysis
  • Programming/scripting skills are a plus
  • Knowledge of the Polish language is not a requirement

What we offer

  • Full employment contract initially for 6 months and extending to maximum of 4 years after initial period
  • Position with 100% focus on research (no teaching obligations)
  • Benefits including reduced-rate for an individual private medical care package and membership in MultiSport programme
  • Cutting-edge equipped, newly installed laboratories
  • Full technical, administrative and organizational support from professional English-speaking personnel
  • Participation in courses, scientific training, support from peers, and academic mentoring
  • Competitive salary in line with experience

About the Faculty

The Faculty of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Biotechnology is one of the sixteen faculties of Jagiellonian University. FBBB is a leading research and teaching institution in Poland well recognized internationally in the field of modern biology. Since 2001 the Faculty occupies a modern "intelligent building" located on the Campus of the 600th Anniversary of the Restoration of the Jagiellonian University.
Research conducted at the Faculty includes contemporary biochemical, biophysical and biotechnological aspects of biological objects ranging from the molecular level through the cellular and up to the level of whole animal and plant organisms. Many modern experimental and computational methods are used by researchers of the Faculty in standard and specialized laboratories that are well equipped with modern scientific instruments.
According to the Nature Index (May 2016), that tracks the affiliations of original research articles, the Faculty received the highest score among all life science research institutions in Poland.
